Maybe for information purpose the mods will sticky a thread like this so SG'rs who are thinking of buying a cam then they will know who has one to ask for opinions on the camera

Canon A-20, Had for 1 1/2 years now, So far a great little camera for the money at the time.

I would recomend this camera for a point and shooter.
Although it does not come with a rechargable battery it runs on 4 AA's. 4 NiCads and a charger ran me $25 and last for what seems like forever. If your away from your charger and need batteries any convenience store has AA's.
Does not do great action shots well but stills are great.
No problem taking 8X10 prints of this cam.
Simple operation, even I can figure it out :)
Quality surpasses many camera's in its price range

Sony Mavica CD-250
I’ve been using this camera now for about a year and a half.

Pro's--------|
It’s a great camera for someone to start out with; who has a basic understanding of burning CDs, and wants a large amount of memory on an expendable medium. (Mini CD-R / CD-RW [8cm]) :D

Durable design, with good strap mount and strong CD drive latch. Tri-Pod mountable. CD-RW media can be formatted multiple times to save CD-R media. LCD has clear band of material above screen, to use sunlight as the backlight, saves battery power. :D

Con's--------|
Although this camera is built well, it still burns to a CD, so this camera is not for the rough photographer, or for where there’s a lot of action... Large vibrations will make the disk burning process skip. :(

Data Transfer and image storage speed depends on speed of CD drive, witch is pretty slow if your in a hurry; flash memory is much faster but also costs more for the space, and is not available as a storage media option. :(

I've got a Canon 10D and Dakota pretty mentioned all the specs but I will go through my lens's......

Canon 28-135 IS 3.5-5.6

Fabulous lens in my opinion, its no canon L series but I like it. Its my everyday walk-around lens, because of its sheer ability to adapt, from semi-wide to decent zoom. 5.6 at the telephoto end can be a little troublesome but the IS (image stabization) makes up for it, and I have even been able to hand hold some decent 1/8 sec shots. I'd rate is 8/10

Canon 50 1.8

For $150 canadian, all I can say is WOW! super sharp, rivals some L serises lens easily! 1.8 is super fast, and is a great asset in lower light situations where a flash cannot be used. This lens is a must have in any ones camera bag! I'd buy two if I needed em :-) 8.5/10

YiKeS

p.s. I can link some of my pictures if anyone is interested in some examples or tests.

I have had my Canon G1 for nearly 3 years now. It has done well for me.
I want to learn more and more to see as beautiful what is necessary in things; then I shall be one of those who make things beautiful. Amor fati: let that be my love henceforth! I do not want to wage war against what is ugly. I do not want to accuse; I do not even want to accuse those who accuse. Looking away shall be my only negation. And all in all and on the whole: some day I wish to be only a Yes-sayer.

Not that I'm huge into taking pics...around 4 years ago got one of these tiny Canon S100 Digital Elph ones....I love it. Small, all stainless steel case, easy to use....being about the size of a pack of smokes...fits in any pocket. Just expensive when they first came out..man, paid around 640 dollars said and done.

Image

Just a 2.1 meg camera...back when I got it they had just come out with 'em. Now 2.1 megs is kinda bottom line...but honestly, for the average camera user..it's still more than enough pixels.

2x optical zoom, 4x digital zoom

My Camera = Sony DSC P5

Decent camera.. Good photo quality..

Not top of the line but it was close at one time. Still haven't found a real NEED to get another just yet.
Simply run adaware, spybot, ZoneAlarm, HijackThis, AVG, update windows daily, have a router, don't open e-mail, turn off action scripting, don't use P2P networks, don't violate EULAs, and wear a condom to get Windows secured.

People say Linux is alot of work!

Canon PowerShot G5

Image

OVERVIEW

With a stunning combination of resolution, speed and control, all housed in a rugged, elegant new black enclosure, the PowerShot G5 takes the lead as Canon's flagship PowerShot. With a host of improvements and professional features, the PowerShot G5 will exceed the expectations of even the most discerning photographer.
The PowerShot G5 features an 1/1.8" 5 Megapixel CCD sensor, capturing a huge 2592x1944 pixel image with exceptional detail and color fidelity. It has a fast, high resolution 4x optical zoom lens with iris-type aperture and User-operated, multi-stop control for spectacular depth of field, or elegant blur. Perfect focus, exposure, and color are achieved quickly with the combination of Canon's exclusive DIGIC imaging processor with iSAPS (Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space) technology, an Intelligent Orientation Sensor, and the use of primary color filters. All these features, plus a host of manual and automatic functions ensure that the PowerShot G5 will get the perfect shot every time.

FEATURES

? 5.0 Megapixel CCD
The PowerShot G5 uses a 5.0 Megapixel CCD sensor, providing a file with 2592 x 1944 pixels for stunning clarity and color in even your biggest enlargements. Primary color filters reduce noise while enhancing the natural colors of the scene photographed.
? 4x Optical, 4x Digital, 16x Combined Zoom
At the heart of the PowerShot G5 is Canons powerful 4x optical, 4x digital zoom lens. With a 35mm equivalent range of 35 - 140mm, a large maximum aperture of f/2.0-3.0, and macro focusing down to 2 inches, there's virtually nothing this lens can't do. A 4x digital zoom feature extends the telephoto capabilities even further, effectively making it a 16x zoom.
? 12 EOS-based Shooting Modes
For the ultimate in control and flexibility, the PowerShot G5 has 12 EOS-based Shooting Modes, including two user-defined custom modes so you'll get the perfect exposure in any situation.
? DIGIC Imaging Processor and iSAPS Technology
The G5's DIGIC Imaging Processor revolutionizes how you shoot digital by allowing the camera to process images faster and improving the accuracy of the autofocus. DIGIC also reduces the effects on noise in your images. iSAPS Technology is an entirely new scene-recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the fast DIGIC Imaging Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.
? Enhanced Movie Mode
The PowerShot G5 can take movie clips with sound up to three minutes long. With new advanced playback features, you can edit, fast forward, rewind and more, right in the camera.
? FlexiZone Auto Focus System
The PowerShot G5 achieves sharp focus with both single and continuous focusing systems, perfect for any photography from sports to still life. With two types of AF, including FlexiZone, where the user defines the focus point anywhere in the composition, and a unique focus-bracketing feature, the Powershot G5 can achieve perfect focus anywhere.
? Intelligent Orientation Sensor
Among the many convenient features of the PowerShot G5, the Intelligent Orientation Sensor can tell whether you shot your photo vertically or horizontally. It automatically adjusts AF, AE and white balance and makes sure that your photos are oriented correctly when you download them to your computer.
? Dirct Print Capable (with Select Canon Printers)
For desktop large-format printing, try one of the Bubble Jet Direct Photo Printers which allow you to print directly in one of two ways: plug the compatible PowerShot camera into the Bubble Jet Direct Photo Printer using the supplied cable, or simply insert a memory card with supplied adapter. You can also connect the printer to your computer for more options. Print high resolution borderless images in post card size or 8.5" x 11" size within minutes. Card Photo Printers let you produce versatile fun credit card size prints or post card size prints in just three easy steps: connect, select and print. Control the printer right from your camera's LCD monitor. Prints dye-sublimated credit card size or post card size - fast. Bordered and borderless options are available. Available paper types et you create mini or credit card size labels. You can even take the printer to a party or an outdoor picnic using an optional battery.

Nice camera, Ghost. I'm still kinda old school myself...
I'm using a Canon FTb...I bought it new in 77 with a 50 mm lens for it.

I did get the wife a Minolta digital. Nothing fancy as she just wants to take pictures of the cat and such but it comes in handy.

I'm thinking of upgrading when the price of the D10 drops...maybe in a year or so.

This is the camera that I got for Christmas. It is the one I used in the thread I posted for the pics from Puerto Rico. It is good enough for now. The only complaint that I have is that it can eat up batteries. Recommendation: rechargables.

SAMSUNG DIGIMAX 530.

Samsung introduces the Digimax 530, an entry-level 5.0 Megapixel digital camera with an pleasing competitive price. A high 5 Megapixel Auto focus digital camera with 3x optical and 4x digital zoom, the new Digimax 530 allows even the casual snap shooter to experience everything the high resolution world has to offer without breaking the bank. Its 1/1.8 CCD captures sharp and detailed images, and the 1.5-inch TFT LCD with multiple language support is ideal for image preview and review.

The Digimax 530 incorporates a built-in five mode flash, adjustable white balance and selectable ISO sensitivity (100, 200, 400 and Auto). The camera's super macro mode allows users to capture crystal clear images of subjects as close as 6cm from the lens. Digimax 530 users can capture both still images and movie clips with audio, and the bundled USB and user selectable NSTC/PAL connectors allow for high-speed transfer to a PC. The camera draws power from two AA or one CR-V3 battery, with eight power source options in all.

With TTL Auto Focus, Programmed AE and Metering exposure controls, Normal and Night scene modes, and Single and Continuous shooting, the Digimax 530 screams value as it's packaged with features that would normally draw a higher price-tagin other 5 megapixel digital cameras.

Features:

5.0 megapixel digital camera
Outstanding 12x zoom (3x optical, 5x digital)
VGA 30 frames-per-second movie clips with audio
Manual focus, manual exposure (A/S/M)

Canon Digital Rebel (original)

Post by poptom »

I got this almost two years ago and I've got to say it takes nice pictures.

Image

My normal lens is a 35mm f2 (56mm equivalent) and I have the 50mm f1.8 (80mm) for a short tele. Of course there's the cheap zoomie that came with the camera but I have little use for it. I have also been able to adapt some of my old long telephotos to this camera but so far I haven't found a need to use them.

I use generic screw-in lens hoods which give much better shielding than the Canon hoods. I always keep hoods on my lenses, no filters or front caps.

The camera is a bit bulky but I think that's mostly due to the large battery which, by-the-way, really holds up. Exposures are always good and the continuous shooting mode is great for action, 2.5 fps, which is comparable to my motor drive film camera but much quieter.

It starts up fast and image transfer with a 40X CF is pretty quick. There is a separate battery for the clock so you aren't bugged to reset time and date whenever the battery is replaced.

I've pretty much gotten used to the undersized viewfinder but I really think they should have made it with greater magnification. This camera has an optical reflex finder but I believe they were also made with a mini LCD.

This is a nice camera and I expect the newer version is even nicer.
