New SG Server

Post by Philip »

It's official... We have a new server that will be replacing the current SG web server. We are also moving to a new data center, I'll keep you updated on the progress.

Here are the server specs:

Server box/MoBo: Tyan GT24 1U rackmount (Transport GT24 B2891G24U4H, with TYAN Thunder K8SRE S2891G2NR MoBo, 500W PSU), supports dual Opterons, up to 4 hot-swappable Ultra320 SCSI HDDs, up to 16GB Registered ECC DDR400 RAM, 2 Broadcom Gigabit network ports.

http://tyan.com/products/html/gt24b2891_spec.html
CPUs (2 ea.): 2x AMD Dual-core Opterons 270 Italy (2GHz, 1MB L2 cache per core, socket 940).
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819103552
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/Pro ... 04,00.html
RAM (4GB): 4x CORSAIR 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM ECC Registered DDR 400 (model# CM72SD1024RLP-3200)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820145310
http://corsair.com/corsair/products/spe ... 024rlp.pdf
HDDs: 2x Seagate Cheetah 10K.7 - ST373207LC (8MB buffer, new generation drives with background media scan, enhanced ECC, 1,400,000 hrs MTBF), configured in RAID 1.
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDe ... ode=101576
http://www.seagate.com/cda/products/dis ... 50,00.html
OS: Fedora Core 6 http://fedora.redhat.com/

The server is already assembled, and I just delivered it to a local Tampa DC today (Powermedium.com). They have multihomed bandwidth, and host most Wikipedia servers, among others. Will ask for some traces when it is up and running, hopefully later today.
Linux is user friendly, it's just picky about its friends...
Disclaimer: Please use caution when opening messages, my grasp on reality may have shaken loose during transmission (going on rusty memory circuits). I also eat whatever crayons are put in front of me.

I have to agree with MD. Fold under the name of MadDoctor, team 15 for the first year or two. In trade... I'll do something for you Philip.

Nice system. (except for Fedora..I lean more toward bsd or debian for production servers)
I'm gonna mis the old datacenter, it's 10 min from my house. When I had high latency I could always walk to McLean and view my last post!

You're right on target... I'm a bit partial to Red Hat/Fedora, and wanted something cutting edge. Also, moving down to Tampa may be a bit of a tradeoff for latency, it certainly can't compete with MAE East, but they are connected to at least 3 major backbones, so I hope we'll be ok :)

It was giving me a few problems, I'll bring it down for testing/OS reinstall eventually, once everything is transferred over and tested on the new box.

Me too :) ... CPU time will not be an issue with 4 cores for sure, and we're doubling RAM.

Awesome!

Let me know how you like that colo. I've been keeping my eye out for the right deal so my colleague and I can get our mail/web server into a nicer home.

Business Class RoadRunner just won't cut it too much longer for us, especially now that we have several sites and mail domains running from our server. I just brought in a guy that is a web marketing guru who promises to bring lots of traffic our way and if that happens, we could have issues. We're having a meeting next Friday evening to discuss our future plans for the server, etc.

I bookmarked the site for your new colo, thanks. :)

Good luck w/ the server move. :thumb:

Configuring mail server and some non-essential/static stuff. Will flip DNS and move Databases tomorrow or Thursday, as time allows. Most likely Thursday.

I'll most likely have to close the forum on the old server after changing the DNS to move the DB - I don't really think it will be necessary to setup remote DB access across the servers, DB replication and all that fun stuff.
