There are many different levels and ways to protect your puter.
This thread will list the basics of personal computer security. It is made in an effort to give people a quick and easy method to ensure the beginning of securing their puter. The minimal security measures that everyone online, from dial up to broadband, should have...

It will be organized by having a different post for each topic, and as previously mentioned, the updates will occur as edits. It will remain locked for obvious reasons, however, your comments, suggestions, questions, etc., are welcomed.

The programs that will have links provided are typically common, relatively easy to install and utilize, reasonable quality and as economical as possible, free in most cases, so no one will have an excuse not to try them.

We ask ourselves, what we have that someone else would want. Well, it doesn't have to be what someone would want from you, as oftentimes people merely like to cause problems for others. Some people will locate a prog that will do everything for them. All they do is run it and when it finds a machine that does not have any security, they have a field day with it. They have access to your box just like you do, and can cause you many headaches, possibly using your machine to harm others with out you even knowing...joou es oWneD by a script kiddie!

Virus and worms and bugs, oh my! So you can't boot up anymore? Why does my puter have a meltdown on Valentines Day? Why are people sending me nasty letters telling me that I gave them a virus? My puter sure is acting strange...

Adware & spyware are becoming more common and harder to catch. You visit a website, you're surfing along, and bam, here comes an assault of pop up ads, ever wonder why?...
Or you click a link and end up somewhere else. what the heck! Why is my homepage different... How come I am getting all of these ads for loans? Strange coincidence that I happen to be looking for a loan, does my puter have esp? Why am I getting all of these emails!

Any of this familar? Want it to stop? Well, you have to start somewhere, so here we go... ;)

FIREWALLS

Post by Ken »

Basic security begins with a software firewall. Think of it as closing and locking the door to your puter. Giving a key to the things that you want to let pass.

There are many different types and levels of software firewalls, this thread deals with the basics as typically it is sufficient protection and let's face it, a cheap lock on your door is better than leaving your door wide open, right? I thought so... ;)

Sometimes, not letting something out of your box is as important as not letting something in... If you have a trojan, or a spyware prog that wants to call home, send info/get orders, from it's headquarters, you want to know this so that you have a chance to stop it, right?

So, the job of the following progs is to do that. Only let in or out what you want it to...It is always a good idea to back up your registry before you install ANY program...If you don't know how to do that, you had better ask now...If you have problems, questions, whatever, just ask and we will try to help...

ANTI VIRUS

Post by Ken »

Like firewalls, this is a huge topic, but since this is basics, you will have to see the Intermediate Personal Security thread to learn details about them.
For now, we are going to say that you shouldn't open attachments or execute progs that you do not know who they come from, and even if it is from someone you know, only if you are expecting them. Even still, you should scan them with an anti virus prog just to make sure...And really have running real time scanning in your puter as you never know how, when, where, why, you can get one...

These are some common ones. Remember to make a registry back up, read and follow instructions carefully, keep it UPDATED! and post any problems, questions, comments, and we will try to assist you...

AVG is used by many, it scans yours emails and certifies them to be virus free. I believe that it is one of the last free anti virus progs...You can learn about it and get it from here:

Adware & Spyware

Post by Ken »

Well, this is about the end of basic security. If you are equipped with a software firewall and an anti virus prog, you are ready to go a little deeper into the aspects of security and need to visit the coming "Intermediate Personal Computer Security" thread... ;)

But there is one more basic prog that will help you out. It gets rid of most known adware and spyware safely. As always, back up your registry! Please post any questions, problems, whatever, and we will try to give you a hand...

AdAware- Has a free and pay version, usually safe to delete the nasties it finds, although it disables some progs that will not function losing the parts deleted and sometimes can violate your EULA (End User License Agreement) which often state it is unlawful to alter the program. You can learn about it and get it from here:
