100 mbit ethernet running at 10 mbit?

Ive got a 100 mbit network (sure of this, even my hub says that the connections are 100). But im transfering files around now, and its going at 10 mbit speed. (about 1 meg a sec), i dont get it, what do you guys think is the bottleneck??

Oh and BTW, im transfering files between the mac and pc.

Two issues:

There are no standards for autonegotiation of NIC speeds. Always configure your nics to a specific speed and choice of duplexing.

If you are talking about a Linksys or other so-called 100mbs switch, you need a little reality therapy. 100 mb switchs are real pieces of hardware. The low-end stuff simply doesnt come close to operating at 100mb. 100mb it also a real stretch for a lot of discs and computers.

A 100 Mb hub is 100 Mb total; a 100 Mb switch is 100 Mb per port.

really?? I dont think so because there was nothing else going on at the time except this transfer..

and the YES, i have the linksys router, BUT i am NOT using it for networking, just using it to share the dsl on the LAN.

Hey, kip, what should the mode of duplexing be at?? Is there a certain standard for each mode?? thanx.

one more thing, the ports all have different lights for EACH port, so if the connection is 100 mbs, it light up as 100, if not then it lights up as 10 mbit..

so is it still TOTAL 100 mb, or each port 100??

No there is no standard for each mode. You should be able to set your NIC for 10 or 100, half or full duplex.

You have a switch, not a hub, and Linksys claims that it will do 200 mbits. I'm dubious, myself.

Yeah, I doubt 100Mbps through Linky- they are cheap. I know... I have one! They're sure not a 4000M or a Catalyst.

Here's a snap of a large file transfer I just did, through a Linky 8-port switch (not router). Best I could get was about 21Mbps. was this a limitiation of the switch, or the capabilities of the hard drives to read/write fast enough?? Who knows. But, they're both ata/66, and fast drives, so I lean toward the switch.

Still VEGETO, I would think you should see more than 1mbps... how were you measuring it? What devices on each end? HD speeds/type?

I know what I have guys hehe

I have a 4 port linksys ROUTER!! Its uplinked to the netgear HUB!!

heres a diagram of my network:

As you can see the linksys doesnt do anything for the network, except provide internet to it, It doesnt set the speed or anything.

so, what now??

ive got a new mac now, BUT the old mac was ATA 66 20 gb 5400 rpm HDD.

and the one on the pc was a 40 gb ATA 100 7200 rpm HDD.

but you see, i even tried sending the data to the firewire drive, and it was STILL at 10 mbits..

I was measuring it like this, by counting the seconds. One second, about 1 megaBYTE gone, second second, another one gone.. Old school style

thanx for the help guys.

Then you really have no idea how fast it's transferring. You need to make an accurate measurement before you can troubleshoot it.

Set up a folder with LOTS of data... and preferably LARGE files. Got a copy of a Win2K service pack or something (100+ MB) ? Rename it about 8 different ways and put 'em all in this test folder. Large files yield more consistent transfer speeds a=than zillions of little ones.

Now set up a performance monitor on your Win2K or XP box. Your data source should be Network Interface; Bytes Rec'd/Sec, and Bytes Sent/Sec. On your graph, set scale to .001 so you're displaying kilobytes; and set graph range limit to 5000. Save this MMC as a name you can remember. Now, begin your transfer of the phony test folder, and post the results.
