How do I install/access DosShell?

Nothing happens when I type DOSSHELL in at the command prompt in DOS, so I assume it's not installed...?

Any way to run it, or install it from the 98SE disk?

I'm trying to run DosShell so I delete a REALLY long file name. It's so long Windows Explorer crashes whenever I try to move or delete or rename it.

I've tried deleting or renaming it in straight DOS, but haven't been able to work my way down through all the directories (it's about 7 directories down, and some of the names are too long for DOS and I get lost in the ~ abbreviations).

C'mon, Humboldt, you can do it. Just convert to 8.3 and using the ~1, ~2, etc. from the top for each directory that shares the first 8 letters in the regular Windows environment.

Show us your stuff and do it.

You should still be able to get it to work with the right files. you will need the following files in order for DOSSHELL to work;
DOSSHELL.COM DOSSHELL.EXE DOSSHELL.GRB DOSSHELL.INI DOSSHELL.VID DOSSWAP.EXE DOSSHELL.HLP

copy them to a directory and type DOSSHELL. Think thats it, been a while.

I think you can get all the files here. Good Luck

Well I'm glad SOMEONE"S getting a kick out of this.

I think the long file name might be the reason why the D drive is freezing. I can't think of anything else, and even ScanDisk freezes.

"Convert to 8.3"??

And for example, I can get the DOS directories to a certain point with the cd command:

D:music\masterlist\Vaison '96 (using vaison~1 here)

but the next directory is vaison, theatre antique.francia.

How do I get it to that? I've tried vaison~2 and that doesn't work.

Can get them all except the last 2, the DOSSWAP.EXE and DOSSHELL.HLP.

Isn't it supposed to reside in DOS somewhere though?

not sure if it was included with win98? I know it wasn't in WinME. If your just using the version of DOS that comes with 98 pretty sure it's not there. Check the C:\windows\command directory though.

Nothing there except DosKey.

I'm using whatever appears when I go to the MSDOS icon under Start/Programs.

Humboldt. Don't USE THAT FILE I JUST SENT you!!

Norton detected a virus in it as I sent it out to you. Sorry, about that. Weird that it didn't catch one when I downloaded it.

EDIT: Okay, Phew. Just noticed that it was blocked by Norton on our servers because it was a zip file, not because it was a virus. Scanned the zip file itself and nothing found. I will try and send it again in a little while when I get home. Didn't expect any excitement from this did ya

I should install it in DOS?
What will Dosmenu do, is it similar to DosShell?

Thanks for all the help Noevo.

Sigh. Already got it, checked it with InnoculateIt and it didn't find anything. Got an error message when I clicked on the exe anyways though.

CM, this question sat in the software forum with no results.

And it's not a software or hardware problem, it's... both

Driving me nuts though.

I can't run any scandisk or defrag or viruscheck on my D drive.

Any ideas about the DOS naming question I had on the first page, with the vaison~?
