I just reformatted my HD, so this isnt a software issue. I have an abit kt7a with 2 HD on the first channel and 52x cdrom master and creative 4224e as a slave on the second channel. I've had some problems with the cdrom even though it's new. Sometimes my computer doesnt see it and other times it'll show up in my computer, but still not work. So, I know it's defective; but I havent gotten around to buying another one. My question is burner related.
The past couple of days half of my burns failed. Today, I burned a movie to disk and then checked it out and my computer kept freezing up. I restarted my computer and it kept happening. So, I removed my burner from my device manager restarted and it then gave me a nice burn(I tried it at 2x just to be safe) and it was fine. What I'm curious about is can having a slightly bad cdrom before the burner(cdrom is master and burner is slave...next in line) have an effect on the burner? If I switch the burner to master and the cdrom to slave, could that help? Or, should I just put my old 32x cdrom in? Thanks for input! |

Try putting the CD-Rom and Burner on different IDE channels. I know that some programs, like Nero, will not do Disc to Disc burns if both the burner and cd rom are on the same channel due to the way they communicate when both are on the same IDE, so that in affect could cause other problems. Try that, hopefully it'll work

Ok...anways back to the real problem, you shouldn't have a problem with the cd-rom/cd-burner combo. However, you might want to check your IDE cable, that might be the problem.

I've got it down now so that it usually burns okay. For example, i just burned five discs that went perfect. On the six disc, it went crazy on me! Towards the end the whole computer was wierd. The seconds that count up as it burns would hang, then jump ahead. I would have to force shutdown nero 5. When I reboot and try the disk, my computer acts like it's a strange foriegn object in there. 'my computer' freezes for 5-10 seconds when i open it up. The way I see it, it's one of four things.
1- bad install of nero 2- creative 4224e is going (already burned over 400 discs with it.) 3- bad cable 4- virus(HIGHLY doubt it.) any suggestions?

Howdy onetrueday
If you suspect a bad install of Nero, I'd uninstall and reinstall it and see what happens. Next, I'd replace the cable and see what happens. 400 burns isn't really all that many for a quality burner. And I'm with you in that I doubt it's a virus.

![]() I have always heard that a cd rom and burner on the same IDE cable is bad, never tried it or anything, since the IDE cable can only acces one drive at a time maybe u could lower teh speed for better burning? |

Go into the Device Manager and enable the DMA mode in the burner properties section.

cd burner
I would as well make sure on is the pri chain and one on the secondary chain,,,,but you are right to think it might make a diff for the burner to be master,,, most motherboards and os's and software just for some reason expect the burner to be master on the secondary chain,,,,,there were a fiew ibm systems that actually had to have it this way to even past post.........I have a 30 gig drive,, and a 10 gig drive on my pri channel and my cdrw (master( dvd drive slave on my seondary channel
Hope this helps |
