What is this part on my car that broke?

I was driving along and heard something shatter. Steering and everything went to hell. Dashboard lights blinking. I'm so used to bad luck with this car that I'm suprised it didn't explode in the midst of all this.

Some wheel that the serpentine belt was attached to broke off. The whole belt came completely loose.

My car is a '98 blazer. The wheel that broke was the one below the alternator. Anyone know what that is?

I don't have a bloody camera to take a picture of it : /

Idler pulley, Power steering pulley or Air conditioner clutch assembly.

What's attached to what's left of the pulley assembly?

Dude, that’s the muffler bearing, you’re lucky it didn’t blow the tires off the rims when that thing broke!

Yeah, but it did hit my halogen fluid tank, so I'll need to replace it too.

The a/c is on the other side in this car. There was a big black spring still attached. I'm guessing all the wheels have that though?

At first I thought my power steering just died, I was about to drive it home. Woulda fried the **** outa the engine.

Sounds like just your idler pulley assembly. If you would have drove without your belt you would have burnt up the engine without the water pump turning.

The only drawback to serpentine belt systems, Loose one item, your down for the count.

Someone on s10 forum mentioned it might be that too. hoping one of those people confirms it.

I didn't seen any broken metal. If it is the idle pulley I could easily replace it.

Going to bed now, I will know more in the morning when it is light outside.

Forgot their was a automotive section.

The part that broke was the tensioner pulley. I only know how to fix airplanes so i didn't know what it looked like.

I was able to order it next day from autozone with the haynes manual for $80 shipped overnight.

That is what it sounds like. I am one of the old times/ex staff on s10forum. Link me your thread over there.

N/M I see you figured it out. But you could have gotten it a lot cheaper. But heh.

You could have asked on s10f. Parts are all over that site. Hell somebody might have just given it to you if you paid shipping.
