Remove dual boot option in startup?

I found a lot of references on ways to do this but they all seem to differ.

I had a dual boot Ubuntu/XP.

Deleted the Ubuntu partition a while ago but still get the prompt of which to use on startup.

I can use msconfig boot.ini to reduce the 30 seconds to 3 seconds but what is the proper way to remove the dual boot completely?

I read I can use the XP disk and fixmbr but I have no clue where my original disk is and am too lazy to find my backup copy file and burn it, so am wondering if there're any other ways.

Thanks

Right click My computer, properties, Advanced system setup/Advance/Startup and Recovery... then click settings and you should see a Edit button under the pull down menu showing whats listed.. just remove what you don't want there and click save.

not 100% sure what is going on.

is it the GRUB (linux) boot menu youre seeing? or the windows bootloader? in either case its an easy fix.

You could also download easybcd, click on add/remove entries and delete it in there. It should then just have the XP entry.

BCD is the replacement for boot.ini (Vista or newer MS bootloader). if it were previously a Ubuntu/Vista install youd be spot on. unless easybcd also can edit boot.ini from his XP install.

Doesn't look Linuxy, white DOS-ish on a black screen?

Same as the way I posted in my first post, just a different way of getting there

My boot.ini says:
Quote:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\wubildr.mbr = "Ubuntu"
So I can safely delete C:\wubildr.mbr = "Ubuntu"?

Yeah using the Windows installer for Ununtu (WUBI)...just makes an entry in boot.ini. Normal full separate partition *nix installs would use Grub as Faust was guessing.

and dont forget to unlock the file so you can edit it. by default should be greyed out. from the command prompt:

CD \
ATTRIB boot.ini -R -S -H

otherwise you wont be able to save the changes.

no worries, bud. bcd is a little harder to work with as its all from the command prompt using bcdedit (or easybcd as the more user-friendly 3rd party method). doing something as simple as renaming a XP or win2k install (will appear as "older version of windows" or something in the OS list) could b as easy as a simple notepad/text edit with boot.ini. with bcdedit would read something like: bcedit set {ntldr} description "Windows XP Professional" . why it was made so cumbersome ill never know.
