Need help with an odd problem [speed related]

Hi guys, I'm hoping someone can figure this out because I certainly cannot.

OK, I have 54 Mbps wireless router and a 54 Mbps wireless USB 2.0 adapter.
Everything works perfect, however when I start a game (it doesn't matter if it's singleplayer or multiplayer) after a while my connection will drop from 54mbps to 18mbps. The problem here is when it's at 18mbps I can only download at 100kb/s as opposed to when it's 54mbps I can download at maximum speed which is 1.1mb/s. The problem persists even after exiting a game.

What I've tried so far
- Rebooting router when the problem occurs. No effect.
- Rebooting computer (Windows XP) when the problem occurs. This will fix it until a game is started.
- Repair network connection when the problem occurs. This will also fix it but the problem will occur again once a game is fired up.

I'm completely lost. I've been googling for days with no results to show for it.

Could be that your game is demanding too many connections from the router, and the router resets its wireless transmission. Thus, your connection starts at 54 and reset to 24, to 18 and then to 1 mbps.

Hey, sorry for the late reply.

When I reboot my router the speed doesn't go up, it stays at 18 - However if I reboot my computer the speed goes up to 54 again. Also the problem occurs in single player games where no internet connection is needed which is why I'm very confused. I'm starting to think the problem is with my usb device as windows keep turning down the speed for some odd reason.

One thing is certain though, it only happens when I play a game. I can watch videos, images, websites etc. all day long and it'll work just fine.
