Internet in China...how does it work?

I'm not sure if anybody can help me on this or not.

My soon-to-be wife lives in China and she needs a new computer. I bought one in the states and am taing it over there. Last time I was there, I didn't pay a lot of attention on how their Internet connections were set-up. In her apartment, all I remember seeing was a cable strung in. No modem or anything. She did not have a dial-up. Could the DSL modem have been built into the computer somehow? I bought a Toshiba laptop for her and a Linksys Wireless router and would hate to take the stuff over there and find out it doesn't work, and she is clueless on how the computer works.

Any help would be appreciated if anybody knows.

Thanks

Probably the apartment has a line from the ISP and the apartment creates a LAN through its own server and networks the service to individual room.

Using a Linksys router at your wife's end is not a problem, provided, its gateway address and its client pool do not have the same IP address range.

To check, connect the laptop directly to the ethernet cable provided and do a tracert. Find out the IP address of the first hop in the tracert.

Eg. 192.168.1.254

Then set your Linksys gateway address to something like 192.168.3.1, and its client pool between 192.168.3.30 to 192.168.3.70

Remember to activate WPA security for wireless operation.

In addition, to do a tracert, click 'Start' and then 'Run'. Type "cmd" into the box and click 'ok'.

A DOS black screen will appear. Type after the C:\>

tracert www.yahoo.com

and press enter key

Thanks for the info! I was just hoping it wasn't a DSL line and her computer had the modem built in.

Thanks!
