Win7 & IE8 Problem

I'm having a problem with a laptop that I did a clean install (upgrade) from Vista to Win7. This was done clean, put a new HDD into this laptop first.

Now that I'm using it I've encountered a strange IE8 issue. I have looked at my other laptop that I just bought that came with IE8 and it doesn't have this problem. Also, I have compared settings between the 2, to no avail. And I have let it do all the updates available, as well as removed IE8 in Control Panel, restarted, then reinstalled IE8. The problem persists.

If I open a new tab and go to a website, this works fine. But if I right-click a link and choose Open In New Tab or click a link that wants to open another tab or window, the tab or window opens, but the web page is never pulled in. It just hangs on "connecting".

Any help would be appreciated, as I really need to resolve this problem.

Hmmm...
All plugins installed...Flash, Shockwave, Java. Although I think this is irrelevant.
What antivirus..is there a browser plugin?
Video card drivers updated?

Flash, Shockwave & Java there.

Avira Antivir on both systems. (The one that works right and the one with this problem).

All Windows 7 updates applied and it doesn't see anything newer for the video.

Is there a repair for IE8 or Win7 I could run?

Another thought, any 3rd party popup blocker or toolbar?

Only thing I can think of, Tools, Internet Options..Programs tab...restore default button.

No 3rd party popup blocker or toolbars. I already disabled some add-in, like Skype, Groove, as well as the Bing & Live accelerators.

Tried all defaults on all sections.

Perhaps you should try running IE in no add-ons mode. Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) to see if an add-on is causing the problem. If this fixes the issue, then go to Tools -> Manage Add-ons and change the Show setting on the left to All Add-ons, then select all of the add-ons listed and click Disable All. You can then enable the add-ons one by one to find which one is causing the problem.

Hope that helps.

There were some recent updates to IE that tend to slow it down considerably and maybe they affected your IE8. Uninstall the recent updats for IE (if are any) and see if the issue is corrected.

Thanks all.

Actually today I backed up the data on this then did another fresh install of Win7, then tested this and it worked. Then as I have been adding drivers and programs back, I keep testing, so far it's still good.

Actually, as I have been reinstalling progs, I found it was Family Tree Maker causing the problem. Good thing I made a restore point before each prog I installed. Because just uninstalling it, would not fix the problem either. It's an old version of Family Tree Maker, but it's worked fine in XP and other than this one side-effect, seemed to work fine in Win7.
