I thought the same, but the price is quite good. Alas, the memory bandwidth will probably choke the CPU.Originally posted by terrancelam

playing too many games on the thing, I'm sure it'll kick ass.But I think you can get better for cheaper. Not to long ago, my buddy got a Asus notebook, Radeon 7500 32mb DDR, 128mb DDR and P4 1.4 mobile, for about $1800CAD. I think you might want a look a bit more.

David: Please let me advise you NOT to buy an HP, Compaq, or Toshiba laptop. You'll be sorry (I work on them..lol). For the same $1200, you can get a dell (my fiance just ordered this..and she loves it) which is better. I won't argue with anyone on what's best.. but trust me, you do NOT want an HP or Comcrap.
just wanted to add, she got a dvd rom, 256MB ddr, 16MB gf2go (or gf4mx, don't member) 30 gb hdd, and a 1.7 p4 mobile..

Amro,
I am with you that Dell is probably the best (It is what I usually advise friends to purchase). My brother has had good luck with his HP and I was lured by the price point. Still, I had a Hitachi laptop which was a near constant headache. I will probably go with a Dell when I am ready to buy.
thank you,
david
hey bud, anytime ok? it's just a fair warning.. hp and compaq products aren't exactly top quality..if you know what i mean..if u want stories i'll tell u.Originally posted by Deus ex Machina

I disagree. Yes their entry level laptops, like Compaq's Presario's, aren't that great. But same goes for every maker out there....there are always their "budget line"...with a limited 1 year warranty, and they have their mid-range and upper line, with solid 3 year warranties backing them.Originally posted by Amro

In my opinion after many years of working on/supporting laptops, Compaq Evo's (which used to be the Armada series) are among the best. Dell makes some nice ones too...they also make some crappy ones (the ones under or just over a thousand bucks). Again, with laptops, all makers make entry level crappy ones, and many make better ones...most better laptops will cost closer to or well over two thousand bucks. You get those 900 dollar ones or 1000 dollar ones, and you're more likely to have issues, and support problems.
Deus Ex...over the past year, I've seen some issues with AMD powered laptops....memory compatibility, lockup issues, deep hibernation issues....in my opinion, the mobile chipsets for AMD processors are not mature yet....I'd looks towards a PIII solution if trying to keep on a budget, or a P4m if budget isn't an issue. We did a big rollout for a New England supply company, they bought a lot of laptops of different makes/models over time. Their "less important" salespeople/road warriors got the budget laptops...that came with AMD CPU's....and there were many issues with those. I was the one stuck with dealing with those, and it seemed like over 50% of them had problems. I spent a lot of time with top level Crucial support also...since we did memory upgrades and that was the first place I looked. They mentioned problems with AMD laptops also. And I'd stress looking for a 3 year warranty....because on laptops, it's important.
And I'm not going to take any flack from "pro-AMD" fans out there....look at the rig in my sig...I'm Palomino powered! Just not laptops...yet.
