Question Singers who don't write their own songs

What do you think about singers, bands, or whatever that don't write their own songs that they put on their albums?

Edit: Note that this is just a question and in no way reflects my personal oppinion.

the whole thing is silly, although Im sure I have listen and enjoyed bands that do it. I suppose, how much does it matter? it is someone's expression after all.

Like Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Andrea Bocelli or Bing Crosby? To balk at singers not writing their own songs would put operas and musicals in a dark light, no?

Doesn't really matter too much, as long as it's a good song being sung well...

As related to Rock and Roll.......I feel like that when I hear something like BananaRama singing Venus....(an old Shocking Blue song), then on the other hand....

Grand Funk's version of The Stones...Gimme Shelter

Johnny Winters version of The Stones....Jumpin' Jack Flash

Stevie Ray Vaughn's version of Hendrix's Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)

Hendrix's version of Bob Dylan's All Along The Watchtower........

As Indy said...if it's done well, that's the ticket..

How in the world can three chicks that CAN'T sing...get a hit....from a great oldies rock song...

All I can think off...is that if you were to put all the DJ's in one place with ummm.....skeletons to hide....you'd make a small city. Its gotta be the answer...

I like SRV's version better also

I agree with downhill, some sing others songs better.

check out >"me first and the gimme gimmies"

I was going to post a link to that thread, but the SG search results for "bullsh|t" were too numerous

sometimes you have to think outside the box to get inside the box .

By and by.... I had interpreted the thread as singers who are not song writers, not artists who have done covers. The goofy f*** that I am.

Looks to me you had it right, David...I'd have to agree with your post about noted singers.

On a more personal note, I don't care who sings New York New York....I've decided that my ears are a precious gift and as such...I turn down the sound when ANYONE sings it. lol
