internet explorer crashes

i have a problem. i open up internet explorer and everything is fine, but as soon as i hit any key on the keyboard, i get an error sayin that ie needs to close. does anyone know why? and also, my friends computer will not shut off unless you kill the main power it just sits there saying its gonna shut down. if anyone knows why this might be, id like some help. thank you.

I have run into both of those issue's. For the IE issue the problem ended up being a corrupted user account. I logged in as admin and created a new account then logged off and back on as the new user twice. Then copied the settings from documents and settings to the new user's account. Before you go through all that I would just log in as admin and see if it works first.

The second thing is to go into power options control panel and turn on APM.

Really need more info such as what OS.

he is running win2k pro.
the os just ignores any shut down command.

Has he done any tweaks like force the page file to be deleted at shutdown? I did that once and it took a good five minutes before it would shutdown. Try letting it sit there for a while and see if it will shutdown. Also look at the profile size of the user. I've seen the file get absolutly huge. The system may be making changes to the file as its shutting down and just taking a long time.

Has he tried the Repair Feature with ADD/REMOVE Programs in Control Panel?
