cable modem + router wont work!!!!

I have Cablevision Optimum Online service in SW Connecticut.
For the past year Ive had the cable modem connected to an Asante (Netgear before that) router and wired each room for internet access. I even had an Apple Airport connected to one of the router ports so my laptop could have wireless access.
I moved this week to another house in the same town.
However, I cannot get the above system to work. The on ly way I have been able to get internet access is to plug my computer directly into the cable modem.
I cannot get it to work with either the Asante router, nor the Airport, which has a router built in (wired and wireless).
I get no IP address when plugging the routers into the cable modem. Only a direct connection between computer and cablemodem works.
Its weird because it worked fine for a long time in my other house. And its the same Cablevision service, with the same cable modem too.
Cablevision switched my acct to the new house.
Could they be tracking down on multiple PC users?
I notice on their web site that they say you need multiple cable modems for multiple computer internet connections.
    Whats the deal?

    Welcome to Speedguide.net Broadband Forums

well there not tracking down multiple PC users
on the website it reads exactly that.. if you have more modems and you need them connected then you need more internet connections.

well thats said.. so on to your problem.

have you configured your router for incoming/outgoing?
have you plugged it in? Just kidding.
have you damaged your router while moving to new place?
does the lan still operate on the router can you network through the router right now?
Tell us a little bit more.. or just answer those questions.

Don`t know if this will help or not but I just recently started using a Linksys router with my system (dumped ICS). Before I could connect I had to call my provider, Insight Broadband and register the router. Several friends here using same service had to do the same.

After "registering" I had Internet again and also a new IP address.

    Hope this helps.

I only have one modem and only want one. They charge extra for using more than one modem.
I want the system to work exactly the way it did before I moved.
Cable Modem > router > wireless
But I cant get the router to work at all with the cable modem. Nor does the Airport, which has a router built in.
Neither the router or Airport can get the IP address on the setup console.
I know its not the router thats damaged because the Airport doesnt work either.
The only thing that works is connecting the cable modem directly to the computer's ethernet port. But then thats only one computer.

The LAN works on both the router and Airport.
    Incoming?Outgoing? What does this mean?
I didnt set up the NAT yet since I dont have a server running yet.

Im afraid that they are cracking down in this new neighborhood.
I think this neighborhood is serviced by a different Cablevision office.

Well thats because you may have it already assigned for the other modem.
but have you tried to enable DHCP?
What OS are we working with here?

Im using Mac OS X (10.1)

Ive tried everything from un plugging to resets, etc, etc.
But no IP address comes up.
When I plug the modem into the computer, it pops up in seconds.

I have only one modem and its the same one that has worked for the last year+.

    This is driving me nuts.
I dont want to pay for this service if its only for one computer and I cant even use wireless.

Does Direct TV have good internet access?

Just a guess but since your setup works when connected directly from cablemodem to your pc- try cloning the MAC address of the pc into the router. Most routers can do that.
