    hd not booting

is one not allowed to run a hard disk on one system, plug it into another, and go well? My friend ran a 6GB HD in his 1700+ with no problems. When we plugged it into a lowly 100MHz Pentium, the BIOS autodetected it with no problems (i think 8.4Gb is max). But the POST hangs after the floppy, indicating "no os found". Is it because it's fat32? can i not use it on a 100MHz system? Do i have to fdisk it?
