    HSF for Socket 370, V7?

    Hey

I don't like my Orb that is on my P3 800EB server right now, the damn thing vibrates way too much and is LOUD

I don't need a WHOLE lot since the P3's run cooler anyways

Right now I've got a P3 800EB on there but someday in the future I may upgrade to a Tualitin with 512K L2, 1.3Ghz or whatever...

    Is the V7: http://www.thermaltake.com/products/heatsink/v7.htm

    Good for that?

I want it to be quiet, but still cool well as it will be on 24/7

also not too heavy in weight

for non overclocked systems i always liked taisol and coolermaster(along with retail intel)... most can be had pretty cheap, and the ones that use slim 60mm fans are stupid quiet.

the V7 can be had for a little more, in the $18 range shipped and will never need to "rev" up for extra cooling...(thus stay quiet)

i'm not sure but i think www.svcompucycle.com has a great price, $15 plus shipping...

hehe... if your not worried about price go the alpha/swiftech route.....

your gonna have to remove the mobo to install her(edit no your not, i was thinking athlon/p4 not s370)... and this is a server so i'm not sure what kinda down time you wanna eat... but with a 21dB panaflo(again thought we were talking 80MM fans not 60mm) on there you have the ultimate in silent cooling.

Re: HSF for Socket 370, V7?

That Volcano 7 should be way more than enough. I use a ThermoSonic V60-4210 for my 733EB and it's never gone over 25c.

I have just recently bought the Volcano 7 for my AMD 1.4 T-bird and I have to say I'm totaly impressed with it so far. It's dropped my temps from 52c to 43c idle tops!. Full load I havn't really pushed it but I played quake III for 30 minutes and it hit 44c. Also i'm impressed with it being so quiet!!!

I sunk the thermo sensor down the middle of the heat sink to so it would keep better temp readings of the cpu and jack that fan up when needed. To boot I only paid $16.00

For the past several months on this forum, you should have seen quite a few posts from peeps who went to the V7 for their cooling solution, and loved it.

VERY quiet, effective, only thing is you mention you don't want a heavy HSF.....but I always wonder why the weight matters to people. It's like their motherboard is made of wet toilet paper and can't hold a pound without the socket ripping out. I'm sure even some 19 dollar motherboard from Tiger catalog can hold any HSF. Not like you're going to bounce your tower down 18 flights of concrete stairs on a daily basis.

i've seen a few single post heatsinks shred a socket after a removal... it's more to do with the pressure on the socket and the clip design rather then the weight of the heatsink...

a few heatsinks went with triple post retention on the clip down side, as thats the side the more easily damaged during installation and removal...

Those 6-point clips are really nice, the Dragon Orb 3 HSF has one.....probably to keep it pinned down so it doesn't take off like a helicopter with it's sick and incredibly noisy fan. That's the single only complaint I have, is it has a standard 2 point clip....although it does have a well done little notch for a small flathead screwdriver to ease in pressure.

yeah i've seen a few people ask explicitly for three post heatsinks after tearing off the lone middle post....
