er could be either an IRQ conflict or perhaps your USB port isn't providing enough "juice" to power the mouse. I tried using a USB powered DSL modem on my old system only to find out the hard way that USB devices are notorious for needing more power than the ports can supply.
there are USB hub/power port things you can buy to alleviate the problem but who wants to spend more than they have too?
anyone else have any ideas?
give us some specs on your PC...how old is it and what mobo and PSU size do you have?
spec-
Rig #1- AMD XP 2400+, A-Bit KR7A/266, Gainward Geforce3 ti200 64mb Golden Sample, 1GB Crucial DDR, 40 gig WD HDD (7200), XP PRO, Vantec Stealth 420 PSU, Soundblaster Live 5.1
Rig #2- P4 2.4c, Abit IC7 800 FSB /w onboard sound, Radeon 9700 Pro 128, 1 Gig Corsair 3200 XMS, Dual (SATA) 36GB WD Raptor's in RAID 0, XP Pro, Antec Truepower 400
Rig #3-AMD Barton 2500+, Albatron KX600 (via), 1 gig Corsair 3200, Radeon 9600 Pro 128, Seagate 80 gig HD, Antec Truepower 400
Unplug the mouse, install the latest IntelliPoint drivers and reboot. Once you're back into Windows, plug the mouse back in and it should auto-detect it.
i tried all that and still no luckOriginally posted by Roadbuster

Didnt it come with a usb-ps/2 converter? I cant think of any reason to run a mouse in usb, since usb devices slow down your memory bandwidth.
It's interesting. Run a memory benchmark with usb devices in, and then pull them and reboot. Run the test again and you'll be shocked at what you've gained.

i have this in my tyan mobo.
hope thats it.
YARDOFSTUF - the other USB port didn't work with it either
one true day - no it did not come with a converter
yardofstuf -- umm, before i did check my bios and i do remember seeing "disable keyboard for usb"... but didn't mention anything and mouse... do u think i should enable it?

just buy a converter unless u have some free support, cuz MS phone service is expensive when u consider its just a mouse

Never knew that...I figured optical mice required USB to function. Any idea on how much of a drag it would be on the bandwidth?
did you enable the USB Ports.... theres also an option in addition to the one for enable USB keyoard.... so check on that......
but yeah... use ps2 if you can
listen bro...I got a real feeling it's your USB port not providing enough juice. You say you have it lighting up and whatnot but then it won't work right. Sounds exactly like my old DSL modem...it would power on...run a for a bit then conk out for 45 seconds or so...kick back on and run a bit then konk out. I don't know what a USB converter is but if it's one of those power hub things then that's what you need. Or get a moiuse that doesn't plug into USB.
Wish I could be of more help

go for the USB to PS/2 converter. It'll be your best bet on getting it working properly. Also does your mouse require batteries?

Thanks for the info...I used the PS/2 connection, it works just as quickly and my memory went from 1957/1957 on Sandra to 1980/1978. Not a huge jump, but still!Originally posted by onetrueday
