Win2K stuck in a boot loop

The system posts, then begins to load WinXP (home) you get the screen saying "Windows XP is loading" for a second or two then it starts the bootup all over again, right from the post test.
I was thinking that it may be a virus but do any of you have other ideas, before I fdisk/format and reinstall?

Has this just happened or is it a new install?
I am assuming the former. Have you tried SAFE mode or Last Known Good Configuration? Just hit F8 when booting up.

It was a fresh install two weeks ago. (customers computer)
I tried safe mode, last known good settings, etc. Still reboots just as it is about to show the desktop. I was just going to wipe the drive and do a reinstall but if I am going to charge the customer for this I kind of need to show some proof that it was a fault at there end. There kids are downloading music form Kazza and they didn't know if they had any virus protection installed so that would mean "no" in my books.
I was looking on Symantics site for some info on this but nothing yet. I was just hoping someone here had mabey run into the same thing.

    try 2 things

    First try this: http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q304449

Second: try booting off the XP CD and choose REPAIR when prompted to install.

As far as proving who, what, where etc.. was the cause it could be 1000 things. If you think it's a virus pop the HD out and hook it up to your machine (secondary) check it for virus's

Thanks for the link, I havn't had a chance to try any of it yet.
I will give it a shot when I get to work this afternoon.
I booted the system off of a Norton A/V disk yesterday and it came up clean, but it scanned in one second so I am sure it was not actualy scanning the H/D, 20Gigs in one second . . . . I don't think so. I am starting to think the H/D my be shot. Wouldn't be the first bad one out of the box we got from Fujitsu.

If your customer, or you, have tried adding a battery backup in XP, and you didn't get microsoft's batt backup patch from win update or you set the batt backup up wrong in XP, it'll loop endlessly rebooting.. disable the batt backup service in safemode and you should be fine. (to get there, once in safemode.. right click desktop: go to properties: screensavers tab: power... button: UPS tab: Select button, choose None and hit ok)

    Amro

P.S. if that doesn't work, check your harddrive, then memory.

system will not boot into any of the options given when you press F8. No mater what you option you choose as soon as the system begins to load it flashes the desktop or command prompt for a slpit second and then reboots.

Try right clicking on My computer, select properties, advanced, startup and recovery, and uncheck Automaticaly Reboot if it is checked. you may get to see an error report.

again and again more problems with XP.. I lost track of how many so far but from the sounds of this guys problem its really not that easy to get back to the desktop... let alone even boot in safemode.. I had similar probs when I had to replace my lithium battery... but thats been awhile too...My question is Do you know if the costomer Activated Win XP? You are faced with a strange decision to reformat or figure out solutions.
Glad you came to SG to get answers.
