Angry I bought a LINKSYS and now I wanna see if it can fly

Hello everyone...was surfing around and saw this site...maybe some of you folks can give me a hand.

PLEASE Excuse me if my technical "know-how" is somewhat n00bish...im actually quite new to the hardware aspect...espectially when it comes to Routers and Internet LAN and Modem settings etc.

Well...there I was. Finally got cable installed on my WIN98 OS AMD1300...and everything was going good.

Until I decided I would get a router and run both computers with it.

Now im sitting here...about ready to rip my face off, and my ears are already lying on the floor...broken from the looong day ive spent talking to various Tech support type peoples who keep giving me crummy answers and make me hang up before it actually works.

    Heres what I know:

Ive done about 1500 different alterations to my TCP IP settings, all of which turn up blank and dont seem to work. (By the guide of the tech support)

All the lights are on the Router, and the lights on my cable modem as well.

    My server is Cox@home.

Both Computers recognize the router as being installed..drivers etc...yet once everything is plugged in, nothing.

One of the computers is using a USB modem..and the other is...er..not..? Not sure what you call the regular cable lines (other than the USB lines.) Both of the settings of lights on the router are green, yet it does not work.

Ive done the step by step installation in the manual, yet nothing.

Both computers work fine with the cable modem, (when not installed through the router)

Im using a Toshiba PCX 2000 Cable Modem, as provided through Cox@home, and my router is a LINKSYS Ethernet/Cable DSL Router with USB and 3 Port 10/100 switch.

Im at a loss here as to what to do. The last thing they told me to do before trying everything again, was somewhere on the TCP/IP Properties im supposed to enter my 'DNS Primary and Secondary IP adresses" under the DNS Configuration tab, and under the DNS Server Search order.

I am supposed to call the cable company and get these numbers, then type them in...and supposedly it will work once I input those IP addresses. However...the cable company is closed for a few more hours. and I have a feeling that its not going to solve my problem.

My ICQ number is 143974553 if anyone wants to drop me a line and see if they can help...otherwise feel free to ask any questions here if you think you might be able to tackle this problem...ill be here for awhile...

Hook up the cable to one machine only, ie disconnect the router.
When the cable modem refreshes you can get the info you need by running winipcfg from the Run dialog. It will show your IP and all other needed info for the setup.
No one has any right to force data on you
and command you to believe it or else.
If it is not true for you, it isn't true.

Im supposed to enter the "DNS Server Search Order"...and the tech said it was the Primary and the Secondary IP Addresses....when I use the winipcfg, it only lists one of the IPs...the primary.

Am I to assume this is the first one..? I guess I wanna make sure that this is the same as the "DNS" Primary IP...

If you only see one DNS entry given from winipcfg, don't worry about it. That'll be your primary DNS. Since you only have one DNS entry, you won't have a secondary. Secondary isn't crucial to having your DNS resolved. At least one DNS is needed, so you're good to go.

As for your remark about other than USB cable link, I'd believe you want to refer to CAT5 cable maybe? I haven't dealt with the USB Linksys router before, so I'm going to guess that it's relatively the same as my Linksys BEFSR41 router (4 port router, CAT5 hookup). Anyhow, make sure that your cable modem's CAT5 cable goes straight to your router's WAN port. As for your other comptures, they all go in the regular ports, and make sure it isn't taking the WAN port.

As for your PCs, try feeding them with DHCP first, that is make those computers retrieve IP address automatically. You should find this under the Network Properties, almost where you found DNS tab, except it's under IP Address tab.

This should work if your router is set to use DHCP. If not, you're going to need to go through the static IP address scheme. Go here (my website, router setup guide). If you go down to about midway where you start to see the Control Panel, follow the instructions after the picture.

    Linky Setup

Having just gone thru the same ordeal, my suggestion in addition to what others have said is to go to the Linksys setup (192.168.1.1) and go to the "filters" tab. I believe its under the "advanced" tab. I spent hours with "professionals" who could not make it work. My solution was to simply enable the IPSec Pass Through (whateverthehellthatis) and it WORKED!

Keep tweeking and it will work. You will love it!
