    Angry cable modem disconnect

My cable modem disconnects everyday and wont restart untill i pull the actual power plug to it and reconnect it 10 seconds later. Ive downloaded the windows 98 patch and the @home patch both on my computer (if this makes a diffrence), I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right way.
    thanks

It sound like your IP is only good for a short time. before you unplug the power try from the start bar.
start, run, then type "winipcfg" find your nic card. do a release & renew of your IP. se if you get a new IP then start your web.

let me know if this works.

    Road Runner?

I had that problem with my RR service in Florida and they had to come out and replace my cable modem.

It happened one other time when my dog bit into the cable in the back yard!!!

Have your service do a modem check - just call your support and they can do it on the phone - and that will tell you if you are on the weak side. They'll fix it if it is..

are you running a router on the connection? if you are there should be a keep alive setting for the router so you don't have to release renew, it will keep the same ip for you always. very helpful if you decide to run an ftp server or such.

is it the modem or your computer that goes offline??

@Homes ip addresses do not change unless they reconfigure the network in your area....otherwise they stay the same

if it is the modem that disconnects call in and get a repush of your modem

and have them run a tool called Matrix to see if your modem is going on and offline

if it the computer going offline then try setting yourself up static so see if it holds the connection

    something else

Alright well i was trying that release and renew thing. But there was noting to release, the release button wouldnt even be highlighted, or the renew, only the release all, and renew all, but when you select release all it says "all aready released or something like that" and when you click on renew all it reads error, and nothing happens, i then have to restart my computer, any idea?
    thanks

if you are running 98, right click on network neighborhood and left click on properties

or you can go to the control panel and double click the network icon

then it brings up a box and it will have a list of protocols and your ethernet adapter and any type of clients you run such as Client for Microsoft networks etc.

remove all the tcp/ip for such and such adapter

once you see that tcp/ip is no longer in there click ok
it will tell you to reboot your computer\

when your computer comes back up, get back into the network properties by the tgwo ways i described previously

    click on add
    then double click protocol
    then select microsoft
then on the right click on tcp/ip
you may not see it right away and have to scroll down on the right side but it should be there.
    once you add that
ok out and it will ask you to reboot again
when you reboot the second time tcp/ip is installed then and automatically configured for dhcp which rr uses.
i'm reciting this from memory so i might be a tad off. it may warn you that your network is not complete when you remove the tcp/ip. if so just click ok. most likely it won't though.

let me know if this helps at all. ill be out of touch until tomorrow morning due to flying to new orleans but there are a bunch of other people here skilled alot more then me on here also.
