    Pentium 4 - Suggestions pls

I am planning on buying a Pentium 4 2.0 gigahertz machine. Can you suggest what I should take into consideration of adding to the machine for gameing wise?

    I was thinking:
    geforce 3
    256 or 512 rdram
    60 gig HDD
    Turtle beach santa cruz sound

    Is that decent?

Yup. Get all the hardware that you listed. If you are going to get a Pentium 4 2000mHz, then get everything else up to date. I am also getting a GeForce3. You may not Need a 60GB harddrive, but games i have seen take 2GB, and that's just one game. Just Don't Get A VisionTek VideoCard. also get a 19 Inch Monitor, Optical Mouse, a set of 4 or more speaker System, and buy Quake 3 Arena!

Well, it's a 2gHz Pentium 4! That's the fastest you can get right now from Intel. My Pentium 3 is at 800mHz and it's great. Your games are gonna be smooth and fast as hell.

for an ULTIMATE gaming rig, why not go to a 24 inch widescreen?

24x or 32x CDRW? faster is better, why even consider the slower 24x speed?

good choices, but for ULTIMATE, i'd want better.

you may want to check out SB's new Audigy line.

    Is that decent?
no, it's only the faster processor you can get, with the best video card you can get, with everything else top of the line...OF COURSE IT'S DECENT!!!

Wait for socket 478, 2 gigers.

That leaves you a possible upgrade path up to 3.5 ghz i believe it is.

hmmm and when will those be out and ready???

heh here i am contenplating getting 1.4 pala, or waiting and getting a 2g AMD or did i miss a memo and they are out now...????

I haven't been a fan of Pentiums for a while.... but if I can get to a setup to be clocked fast and runs faster for cheaper than a AMD rig... For a gaming rig that is..

BTW is it worth it to upgrade a SB Live X-gamer (non 5.1) to one of the Audigy line? or should i go the cheap way and get a SB or Philips 5.1 card and wait... Though the Audigy cards were sold out in a day that or pulled at the local CompUSA

Side note : these compaq MSN compainons are SLOW, for a Net only computer... sounds like No CPU or Power Fan... that or a REALLY quiet one, Tiny LCD screen... and no way to see the specs out of the box....(no "desktop" or "task bar") only supports MP3 and WMA files... BUT if you could find a way to make it a portable... it could be a cheap alternative to a Laptop..... dunno the price on these things... but im tempted to take a screwdriver to it and see whats it made of... =)

    Ahh from what I know

I think the 2ghz P4 is the 478 "northwood", isn't it? BTW when you get your P4 cpu, make sure it's the socket 478 type and not the 423.

As for the rest, hmm consider and Antec 1030SX case, Enermax 400W PSU, IBM 60GXP40 gig HD, the Geforce 3 would be a nice addition to the box, Plextor Burner, maybe 12X or 16X, 16X Toshiba DVD, hmmm a flat screen monitor prefferably 19'', but 17" will do as well. Don't forget the 1.44mb floppy as well hehe uhhh....and maybe a NIC card.

I think that's it and btw Tigger, though we all love AMD, the new P4 Northwood, I admit, is very very insane with performance and unlike it's AMD counter part is a bit more durable with it's life span.

Haha you still think that the higher the CPU clock is, the more preformance you get, well i'm sorry to tell you, but you're WRONG. A 1.4Ghz Palomino will Kill a 2Ghz P4 in most benchmarks except for HEAVILY SSE2 optimized ones.

As far as a 1.4 Thunderbird vs a P4 2ghz, the P4 wins hands down.

We are talking chips you can actually buy. I could say to you, "Well I see you your 1.4 ghz pally...and raise you a 3.5 ghz Northwood."

    See what I'm saying?

if you read the original posters post in this thread this thread was not intended to be an intel vs. amd thread

    ya'll have made it one

lets try to stick ON TOPIC in threads, specially when they are heated debates that can happen like this...

can you explain or show a link why to get a socket 478 type and not a 423? and i just saw a p4 motherboard with a socket for a CPU small as hell, what socket CPU was that? it was smaller than all the other p4 cpu sockets
