i'm not sure which forum this belongs in but i'll start here. i've had a continuing problem of having to reset my cable modem (usually in the afternoon after work). the routine seems to be this:
* everything works fine in a.m. (able to go on-line)
* in the afternoon, after work, when i try to go on-line i can't
* usually i can reset the modem once or twice and i can
reaquire an ip and all is ok.
* next day same thing all over again.
i've spent a lot of time with cable tech and they have rewired cable from house to my puter. this had no effect on the problem. they have changed out the modem and i have changed out my nic. still no affect on problem. i have a linky 4 port router and no other firewalls.
my question is... could my virus checker (norton2000) be causing this problem? i've been running the virus prog several months. until the past month, i only occasionally had to reset the modem. i've checked with two of my immediate neighbors and they have not experienced any of these problems...i'm in the process of changing my virus prog but i'm curious and would like to have any comments on this nusianace. thanks, rookie
I have just got finished resolving that problem. I have called and talked to the techs WAY too much. They finally decided to re-lay the lines coming from the box clear into my house. They also upped the amperage on the box out there. The picture quality in the house is ultra clear now and my cable has been disconnect free and online for over 10 hours now. Usually in the evenings it would disconnect continuously. Keep being persistent man and don't let them give you the sh*t end of the stick.
thanks for the comments Boosted3si...the techs have been most helpful to date. .. i'll talk with them about re-running the cable from the pole to my house. i've changed my virus proggy and plan to monitor this change to see if there is any improvement. thanks, rookie
Good luck, I wish you the best of luck man. It has made me a lot happier finally after several months, having a reliable connection like I have been paying for! I'm going to work. I'll be back later.
I had this problem is Las Vegas. Of course it gets hot there which was part of the problem. The problem was a piece of equiment where there undergound cable spilt.
Then they gave me a modem which had compatibility with DOCSIS-qualified systems. My old modem was not DOCISIS.
Then here is the kicker. They found out the modem they had given me(months before) was not on file and could not figure out why I could log on at all.
Then they entered the number from bottom of my router(guess Mac #) to read. I was told if they had to read all 4 computers it would hurt my speed.
After all that it was fine. Then I moved out of State and no problems on new system.
Hope some of this gives you some new ideas where to look.
weeeelll...as you pros already knew...it had nothing to do with my anitvirus...same old problem today...visited with two diff techs today, but they did not think it had anything to do with equipment at pole or to my house...they said they could not think of anything else to do other than have "engineering" evaluate it.
oh well...looks like i'm in to resetting the modem every evening to do my thing rookie
I'm having this same exact problem with my @home service and they can't figure it out. We have two ip addresses in our place. I'm kinda new with this networking stuff, so maybe that is the problem, but can a bad network cause my cable modem to lose it's connection?? I have @Home and everything was fine for the first week, until my roomate brought his computer. We bought an Asante FriendlyNet 8 port hub and got an additional IP address. I have one ethernet cable runnning from the cable modem to the uplink port, and uplink is on. Then we each have eth. cables going to our respective computers. The problem is that ever since this configuration, my cable modem has been losing it's connection. @home recommended "powercycling" the modem, which is basically unplugging it and plugging it back in and this would usually bring the connection back, but I would sometimes have to do this 6 or7 times, usuall later in the day/night. @home finally sent someone, they check the signal stregth and said it was good and they replaced the modem. The only problem is that this new cable modem does the same thing, except it is one that resets on its own. But, last night it had to reset 7 or 8 times. Am I doing something wrong here?? Is the hub the problem? Is my networking config. wrong? Once in awhile after a couple of lost connections I will just go straight form the modem to m computer, but it will still go out. Does anyone have any idea what to do? I would really appreciate any help.
Thanks...
I have the same problem. Only difference is, I have Prodigy DSL. Found out from Executive level tech that actually I am in a no service area. Signal does not travel as far as initially expected. But at night, cannot sign on and 3 out of 4 times can reset the modem and it will link up and let me surf. Do not understand why, but like I said does not always work.
ok...in case it's of any value, here is the latest on my continuing problem...i spoke with a supervisor in tech support for my isp and after expressing my utter frustration of having to reset my modem every day to reacquire an ip, he informed me that they were having a problem that was causing "ips to be dropped". he said it would be a week or two b-4 this would be corrected. in the meantime, they sent another tech out to look things over (more likely to console me . after visiting with the tech for about an hour and finding no problems and seeing my frustration with the service, he stated that the real problem was that the isp had over-sold on ips and this limited me (as well as others) from getting online during busy times.
he suggested that until they acquired additional ips to support their volume, that i ask for a fixed ip (wow! idoubt it). that is my next step. any comments/suggestions are appreciated. thanks, rookie
obviously as you might expect, i did not get a static ip however, i did get a lot more b.s. seems they don't like my router (only have one pc at the time...using it for fire wall). tech said routers were "really bad"..will cause ips to be dropped frequently and they are "really bad news"...god!!!, i'm tired of this b.s. he had me download and run "ipac_off" saying this would fix my problem...what the h... is this and will it really help...i'm to the point where i just don't know what to believe when talking to techs. help!! rookie
