    Computer wont shut down...

The Mom box just received a new monitor (my 19 inch Dell Trinitron) and a nice set of $80 Altec Lansing speakers.

Well, I plugged them in and started up the system, and whenever I try to shut down or restart, it stops cold at the "windows is shutting down" screen.

I ran scan disk, defragged the hard drive, and refreshed the monitor under display in device manager.

    Any other bright ideas?

Check System Properties/File Properties/ and the tab for your cdrom. If its set for a high cache, lower it and see if that helps. For some reason, setting it for a large cache can make your system hang when shutting down.

Ok..so maybe thats not it, but its a shot in the dark anyway.

Boot it into safemode and see if there are multiple monitors listed in device manager. If so delete the one your not using

It's not the patch. I have SE.

Would a network setting be hanging up the system? It is not hooked up to our router because we moved the computer today. Perhaps file sharing or somesuch is the cause?

Yes a network problem will deffinetly cause that. It happened to me at work 3 days ago when the network went down. The box wouldn't shut down or reboot.
