    Network is busy

Everytime I want to copy a couple files from one computer to the other on my home network....after a while it will stop and say
    "Network is busy"
I try to transfer files from the Dell to the Emachines specs are as follows

    Dell P3 1ghz 512mb RAM 18.2gig Fujitsu U160 HDD Int NW Card 3Com 3C905C
    Emachines Cel 400 512MB RAM 25.4gig 7.2k RPM 20gig 5.4k RPM DLink DFE 530TX Network Card

the other comp on the NEtwork is (if important)
    Custom K6-2 500 124MB RAM 9.2gb 5.4k RPM DLink DFE 530TX+ Network Card

    connected all to a
Netgear EN 104TP Hub 10mbps (accidentally bought the wrong one )
This problem has just started recently, I did not have any problems like that before....I even copied a whole game once with no problems.....

the inevitable question is what changes have you made recently, I really don't remeber changing anything that could even have possibly affected that....
Only thing I even remember changing is IP addresses
I changed the Dell from 10.0.0.3 to 10.0.0.2 and the Custom 10.0.0.2 to 10.0.0.3......
actually I'm thinking the hub is the problem anyways...

If you are trying to transfer lots of data on more than one machine at a time throught the hub then you are most likely getting collisions and each machine has to wait till the wire is available.

I'm guessing you don't have this problem when your just sending machine to machine with no other data crossing over the network. If you can't afford a router then your only real solution at this point is to limit the number of stations transmitting large amounts of data at the same time.

    I plan on either
a.) getting a switch now 100mbps OFF COURSE and adding a router once I get a cable modem
    or
b.) Router once I get cable modem.....possibly a new hub until then

well that's still doesn't really answer my question....
I'm only transferring/tryting to (even on one file it does that), mp3s from one comp to the other....The other comp does nothing over the network....
Since you said that though I will try unplugging the cable (Cat5) for the other comp from the hub...see if that helps
although THEORETICALLY it should NOT make ANY difference at all

Ethernet by nature is a shared media enviroment. What this basically means is that no 2 stations can access the same piece of wire at the same time, when they do collisions are created and each station trying to transmit runs a backoff algorithm in hopes that it's next attempt will be an open piece of wire.

This can be eliminated by incorporating switches into your network that setup virtual channels between source and destination.

what I don't quite understand is why it worked at one time....but it does not anymore now.....

also I did try unplugging the other comp from the hub and it did not work either....

    no more replys?

the game I transferred was Fly2 over 1 gig of files....so there should be no reason I can't copy files anymore now...

could be a bad connection or a bad hub, more likely though is that some computer on the network, could be the sender, receiver, or another one is sending excessive traffice for some reason

Emachine........hehe, i wouldn't have one if someone paid me to take it, we'll, actually there is this dip in my back yard that it would fill up nicely, wanna pay me to take it? hehe

i hardly dount it has anything to do with collisions...my school is a very large network and they have half-duplex 10 Mbps and it runs just fine (slow but it doesnt get any errors like that)

update your NIC drivers..well try that and tell us how everything is

I'd start by finding out where that "network is busy" message is coming from - never seen or heard of such a thing.

    Unhappy

    I have a similar problem...

It started when I changed the ip of both computers... after that, the network just wasn't accessible anymore.

    original config
    pc1 : 192.168.0.1
    pc2 : 192.168.0.8
    subnet : 255.255.255.0

then i changed pc2's ip to
    192.168.0.2

it worked for a few days, then just completely stopped. I don't understand why... then after a few more days, the subnet on pc2 changed to 255.255.0.0. How it changed i don't understand, so I changed pc2's subnet back to 255.255.255.0 but both puters still could not access the network, until this very day...

the death of my lan playing days... *sigh*

At one point, switching both pcs off for some time and switching them back on got the network working a few more days... then gone again.

So I formatted both... reinstalled windows, reconfigured the network, and voila, network was working as usual... it lasts for about 3 months then gone again... think it's time for new cards... i'm using an ISA based Realtek2019.

Not much help, but hey, there are a few ideas for solutions, as frustating as a clean install of windows, it may help =)

When you are doing a transfer, are any lights blinking on the hub at all?

If you have a crossover UTP cable try connecting the two network cards directly. If the transfer works now there is something with your hub.
