Thread: Lobo...about XP and your speeds

Post Lobo...about XP and your speeds

I remember not too long ago when we were talking one night and you were downloading around 600KB using WinME. Now you are downloading around 1000KB. First, with that 750mhz processor of yours, how much ram do you have? What kind of NIC do you use and did you use the tweak for that to allocate memory to it (irq)?

2 reasons why I ask. first, I think something is wrong with my tweaks cause they aint working like they used to. I was browsing through one of the posts where some guy had posted this ridiculously high rwin and everybody jumped on him saying his post numbers were mistyped but he replied saying that is was in fact correct. So I decided to try it also but I also gave my NIC the additional IRQ tweak but went a little further and put in 6096 instead of the 4096. Well I could download really fast at the start but eventually it came back down to about 400KB. So I decided to go back to my original rwin and nic tweaks. Then, I felt froggy one night after constantly hearing Halflifer talk about Cyberwizard and their tweaks, so I wanted to see why he's always bragging about his speeds. So I downloaded the tweak and it sucked. so I went back to my old trusty rwin setup and now it just doesn't seem to get it on like before. I also am experiencing packet loss on some tests but not all of them. What do you think? I'm within a hair of formatting and putting WinME on my machine but I just don't want to invite too many problems into my system and I'm not fully sure how some dos based app are gonna react like Neotrace which does ping and traceroutes in a gui. any thoughts?

Yes I use the NIC tweak Irq 6144, and if you downloaded reg file with big RWIN you need to clean that out of your system, Cablenuts program will do that, just follow directions on help page below in sig and you should be alright, it's starting over, but not "R", 196 RAM, then tell me what OS and system specs

You are going to have to buy a program that defrags the registry, this one does and a whole lot more, I have had it for 5 years (updated) and it is the best, does everything but shine your shoes go hare

I already cleaned it out but the cyberwizard tweak wasn't as big as the ones we're currently using (RWIN). I already use VOPT ME for a defragger but thanks for that tip!

I guess what I'm getting at is this, what OS best supports big Rwins and our Nic IRQ tweaks? I'm using 98se as you know and have ME ready to go. I know you don't remember evrybody but my specs are 800mhz athlon w/ 256MB ram. I really want to FDISK and repartition but 98se has treated me well, just don't like the fact of going to ME but if it has some speed benefits in relation to tweaking then I guess I can try it. What about Win2K? I'm going through my A+ certification as we speak so I'm gonna be under the hood quite a bit and Win2k is part of the test.

Well W2k is more like XP, but I liked ME better than SE, it was faster too

I built my friends puter a month ago and being a newbie I went ahead and put ME full version on it and he hasn't called me since with any bugs or this and that but I did do all the tweaks on it and told him not to touch anything for 6 mos until he learned how to do all the maintenance stuff on his own. But it sure was fast! thinking I may do the ME thing first before I try XP or 2000.

Well if you do ME download first IE 5.5 SP1 or IE 6, good luck and then backup registry

Yeah...I'm gonna do a clean install with the full version of ME and see how it likes my system. But Win2k has to be formatted with the NTFS file system right for a dual boot but WinME still has to go on first right?

sorry...taking that issue to the right forum!
