    Question New on It

Hi I´m new on this forum and in My new connection By Cablemodem .I live in Argentina and I use Fibertel´s Service.
I´ll try to explain my problem.I don´t pay for the service connection anymore since Dec/2000 because I have an internal problem with them but I have the hole equipment with me. When I reinstll windows 98 II My connection becomes too low ( a month ago). Y can download files at a low rate ( 1 kbps) and I can´t see the pages on the web. With my e-mail via Outlook Express I receive the mails but I can´t send anything.
What can I do? I lose some information when i reinstall windows? What did I need? I have friends with connections to Fibertel, so can I take some information from them? Where? can you help me connecting me again to the service? .
Thanks for all and the page is Great.

Please click in my signature where it says Test your tweak here, then:
At top where it says edit click and select, Select all,
Then go back to same edit button at top, click and select copy.
Come back to Speedguide, same thread you were on, in post reply box, with cursor blinking at begining of box go to top, edit, click, select paste, click, this will put information in box. Please X out your IP address, Thank you.

Also on the Windows install you did... was that a clean install? (reformat and then install) or a Install over the old one?
If you did a install over the older windows, check your Device manager and make sure there are not Duplicates of the devices. if there is let us know asap!
    Thanks for using Speedguide!

    Thumbs up

    Great!!!
    So far so good...
Run that test Lobo refered to and post it here so we can check your settings.
Also you mention equiptments... what kind of setup are you on? do you have a router? are you networked in house? are you using a Hub?
reason we have to know that is because what affect one pc affects the others on a inhouse networked system.
If you have One Pc hooked up to the Modem then we take it from there.
I know this sounds like a lot of questions.. but the more we know the better we can help... so bear with us ok?
Also Windows has an Updated patch you may need to get. Go here--->Speedguide Patches
scroll down to where is says.. Microsoft Vtcp.386 Update ( read before installation
if you have not got the patch yet you need to before attemping to tweak your settings.
    Install that patch and REBOOT!
Let us know something.. we want to help.

For LOBO: This is my test but I can only make It with my Dial-up Connection, because If I made with my Cable connection gives me a error like if I'm desconected.
In the conection options of IE 5.0 I enable "don't make any conecction". It's OK

    SpeedGuide.net TCP/IP Analyzer
TCP properties for IP = xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Note: Read the FAQ if the above is not your IP address.

    TCP options string = 0204021801010402

    MTU = 576
MTU value seems to be optimized for dial-up. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.

    MSS = 536
Maximum useful data in each packet = 536, which is equal to MSS.
MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 8576
    RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
    Unscaled Receive Window = 8576
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
    523136 (MSS x 122 * scale factor of 8)
    261568 (MSS x 122 * scale factor of 4)
    130784 (MSS x 122 * scale factor of 2)
    65392 (MSS x 122)

    bandwidth * delay product:
    Your RcvWindow limits you to: 343.04 kbps (42.88 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
    Your RcvWindow limits you to: 137.216 kbps (17.152 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.

    MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 112 hops
    TTL value is ok.

    Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

    Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

    113345 connections tested since 03.10.2001.

I dont have network in my home, I think that I dont have a Router ( I don't know exactly wath it is), I dont use a hub.
P.D.: Lobo I don't understand your last post about the 2 IE opened.
And one more thing: Someone Speaks Spanish, so I cant understand much better?

Well I don't speak Spanish but you can open IE 2 times and in order for your cable modem to work you will have to get a ISP to handle it

I'm thinking one of two things here. One, you may have all the equiptment but don't have the service. or...
Two, you may have the service, but because of some internal problems with the IP they may have capped you at a very low cap.
So lets forget the tweaking part and back up a little bit.
If you have a cable modem, Is it Hooked up and are you getting a reading off your cablemodem?
Next run your winipcfg from your run box and see if you are getting an IP address.
If you're not sure how to do this let me know.
    Thanks

I still don't Understanding this part. When you say that "I can open IE 2 Times", you are telling me that I can see 2 web pages at the same time? If It is like this, I know It but If it's not i still don't Understanding.

Where Is the "Internet connection Wizard", because my IE is in Spanish And I can't found It.
    Thanks

Go back over your last two post and remove the IP addresses from the post.. You don't want to didplay them for safty sakes.(hackers)
Try Norm's route and let's see where that lead this ok.. I don't want to confuse the matter by going two directions.

    Ok lets go slow please.
I use The Internet Wizard, I enable the lan connection, and in the next step what I must
do; enable automatic proxy detection ( yes o no)?, fill in something in Address box?.
In this label I don't have anything checked .
On the next step I've to configure a mail count?
So the situation is this: If I want to open a page like Hotmail, for example, the machine
think a little, on the status bar say that found the site, then say that is waiting for
answer, and the say that the page don't found.
But if I want to download a file with the Download Accelerator ( for example), the file
begin to downlod in a very low rate ( 0,8 Kbps)
If I want to check my E-mail, the connection download the new e-mail but not let me send
    anyone.
So I think that my problem is the configuration of the connection.
Another question? I need to reinstall Windows 98 II again, I can or not? Its better or not?
which way to reinstall you recomend me?
    Thanks for all
Yes, Argentina is a beautiful country, thanks

    tpolice,
I'm gonna break down your last post so we don't miss anything.
Before I do that let me explain the open two IE deal. If you start your browser by clicking or double clicking on the Big E,that start one browser.. now after the one has started then you click on the Big E again and it will start a second browser. This is how we keep track of what was said while writing the next post. As I am doing now.
    Ok.. now... you said,
I use The Internet Wizard, I enable the lan connection, and in the next step what I must
do; enable automatic proxy detection ( yes o no)?,
NO fill in something in Address box?. No again
In this label I don't have anything checked .
    You done right there!
    Next you said...
On the next step I've to configure a mail count? if you already have an e-mail account you shouldn't have to do this.. If I recall it ask you if you have an exsisting account.
So the situation is this: If I want to open a page like Hotmail, for example, the machine
think a little, on the status bar say that found the site, then say that is waiting for
answer, and the say that the page don't found.

I had the same problem and had to download this from the Microsoft website. you can find it here-->Network Problem on Win/98SE
If I want to check my E-mail, the connection download the new e-mail but not let me send anyone.
This is not problem with your cable... it is a mail box setup problem... we'll get into that in a short.
So I think that my problem is the configuration of the connection.
That what we're working on now...
Another question? I need to reinstall Windows 98 II again, I can or not? Its better or not?
which way to reinstall you recomend me?

Well if you did it once you shouldn't have to do it again...You said you did a clean install earlier.. but if you want to it's your choice.
    Keep in touch!
