Are these the optimal settings, or should I try more or less?

We have patch that puts in best settings on patch page off main page this site. It's called web patch, make sure you get one for your OS

Them is the standard settings...
On a cable connection with a 500KB/sec connection thats K-Bytes not bits I have seen them as high as 64 for both on a DSL connection able to do 150KB/sec I have seen it as high as 32 for both.
I personally run at 24 and connections down to 256 handle the example you have there fine..
Now the other way to go esp. if you hit troublesome pages is to drop both to 12..
