Ok here's the deal.
I have 2 computers here at home.
Both very new machines with a fresh copy of Windows Me installed on them.
and
RoadRunner cable Internet with a separate IP purchased for each machine.
I get them both online by use of a hub with an uplink.
The cables are set up like this.
Cable from the wall to the cable modem, RJ45 cable going out of the cable modem to the hub (that has 4 ports) and 2 more RJ45 cables from the hub to each machine.
Both machines can get online fine so I doubt the problem is hardware related!!! But I'm having trouble getting the computers to recognize one another and I don't know why because it all was working great for week’s prior!
The deal is I can't get the Windows networking (witch is installed on both computers) to see the other computer as logged onto the network. (And they both are)
The following is a side note that I think might help in diagnosing the problem.
I needed to transfer files from one machine to the other and since I couldn't figure out the networking problem I just opened AOL instant messenger and went to transfer the files that way.
Now I've transferred files this way before I even had networking set up on the machines, (as well as over ICQ) and the transfers went really fast! At like 800K to 1 MB/sec! Now though I get really erratic transfer rates. All while sending one big file mind you.
Sometimes it will transfer as slow as 30K/sec and sometimes as fast as 400K/sec for long stretches of time.
I don't know why the erratic speed but I do know why it's slower the 800 to 1000.
BECAUSE!!!
It's transferring through the cable modem.
Before it never made the "Activity" light on the modem flash when I transferred files and now it does. It's actually going over the Internet and before I guess it just went through the hub right to the other computer.
Don't ask me how considering it use to do this before I ever had networking installed.
Anyway this tells me that there's definitely some problem with the two computer communicating over the network. BUT BOTH CAN GET ONLINE FINE and both have there own IP!! So like I said before I think that rules out a bad hub or network card.
Windows Me is suppose to be really good at networking and "IT WAS" all working fine so can anyone help me here?
Why can’t my computers see each other?
