    Post Win2000 100mbps network speed

G'day. I have two machines linked by a 100 mpbs network - one is NT 4, other is Win2K, but I'm changing both to Win2K. File transfer between the two machines does not seem to be as fast as I expected, given a 100mpbs network. I see that there are TCP/Ip parameters that one can change for hi-speed cable and DSL modems. Can (should?) these params be changed (and to what values?) for use on a LAN?

    Thanks

Windows 2000 comes optimized for LAN usage however you could apply the brobadband patches if they are on the Internet.

A 100 mbps network has a maximum data transfer rate of 12.5 megabytes a second.

If you are using TCP/IP you also have overhead to deduct.

What kind of speeds are you getting?

    Welcome to Speed Guide lbradley...

Also, are you sure your LAN is running at 100mbps? Are you using a hub, switch, or crossover cable between the two PCs?

I'm using a crossover cable - about 10 feet. Network claims to be running with 100 mbps connection. Using the Performance Monitor, while copying several 1 megabyte files, I see an average of 3 megabytes per second.

next question you must ask yourself, larrry, is how fast your two machines are? the network will only convey packets as fast as the machines can send/receive them.
