Sherman Hemsley, whose greatest claim to fame was his role as George Jefferson on the groundbreaking 1970s sitcom The Jeffersons, has died. He was 74.
Hemsley was found dead at his El Paso, Tex., home.
Hemsley appeared on The Jeffersons for the entirety of its 253 episode run, from 1975-1982. The show, which was a spinoff of All in the Family, remains the longest-running sitcom to star a predominantly black cast. The actor also starred on NBC’s Amen, and had a role on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
I loved it when he and Archie went at each other. Many a laugh.
