Gaming Problems

Hello everyone. Looking for some answers to a few problems I am experiencing on game connections since I hooked up to DSL.
I installed DSL from SWB speedstream and now am having problems getting games to connect from within Kali and the Zone. I just purchased Links 2001 and it freezes up on the connection screen on the Zone. Also Close Combat 5 will not even make a connection from Kali but I haven't tried it in the Zone. Ever since I have installed the DSL, I have been having problems shutting down my PC too. It will turn off the monitor, then go through the process of shutting down the PC. Problem is, it never does. The PC keeps on running and I have to shut it off manually, then go through the process of a disk scan everytime I turn it back on because it says the PC was not shut down properly.
I have a Gateway 800 Athlon, 256 mb ram, GeForce GTS 64 mb video card using windows ME as a operating system.
If anyone has experienced any of these problems or has an idea, I would appreciate the help. I have tried turning off all files not being used by the PC when trying these games and it was still fubar. Thanks!

Is it a USB or Ethernet modem?

It is a USB connection.
