For what ever reason, I cannot get Java to update. OS is Windows 7 (32-bit) this is multiple machines that are having the problem.


Java Runtime Environment 1.7.0.3 (32-bit) Will not update when I go through the Java Control Panel applet to update.

I have:

Uninstalled 1.7.0.3
Reboot
Run JavaRa
Reboot
Install Java 1.7.03
Try to update: Tells me the latest version is already installed.

1.7.0.3 is NOT the latest version. 1.7.0.4 is.

And if you download the latest and install over the top (it will remove prior versions)....
(I never use the update built within)

Didn't realize that (it will remove prior versions).



The 1.6.0x versions never gave me a problem.

Yeah it started removing prior versions somewhere in the .22 range....if you have REALLY older versions you'll have to clear those out via add/remove.

I read somewhere that the 1.7.X versions were not really designed for the end user, they were supposed to be for testing. I had issues with them on some pcs, some programs that needed java would not recognize it. I went back to the 1.6.X versions and have not had any issues.

I wish I was aware of that before I went and did 100+ machines. So what do you guys recommend? Go back to 1.6.x? I really have little desire right now to go and redo 100+ machines. :/

Why are you needing to use it in the first place? Downgrading to get your programs to work is insane due to the security issues. Do you have any other alternative?

If you are referring to the 1.6.X versions then there is no security risk, they are updated just as the 1.7.X versions.

Your reply is even LESS relevant, and where is someone talking about downgrading to old versions? I was confirming that Sun is releasing 1.7 for Win7 clients...that it doesn't appear to be development only releases.

I was able to use the 1.7.0.2 update button to go to 1.7.0.4 on one PC.
