    Firewood for next winter

Split 7 cords in the last week, 1 more to go and will be ready for next winter.
All oak, locust, poplar & a little bit of maple.
    Nothing burns hotter than locust!

All, that was split using a 40 yr old Mighty Mac horizontal gas-hydraulic splitter like this one:

Lift the logs onto the i-beam. I wish I had a vertical splitter. During the winter I split at least a cord using an ax, just for the fun & exercise.

Damn! Do you use it for heating the house?

We have a fireplace in our home but living in So Cal there aren't that many days that lighting it seems appropriate. But we do enjoy ours. I'd say we probably have about the sum total of 3 weeks worth of fires (only at night) during the year just for the effect and fun of it. There's a new law in California where you can't build a home with a wood burning fireplace any more. That sucks.

Yup, I use it as main heat source. I also have oil, but never use more than 150 gallons. It's a 500 gal tank, and at today's prices would cost around 2K to fill it. Wood is far cheaper...free + my labor to split it + a few gallons of gas for the splitter.

Do you have neighbors clearing property?

Around here madrone and oak start at $200 minimum, even fir goes for $150 per cord.

I can't believe it costs that much for birch firewood. Birch doesn't burn that hot.

I get all my firewood for free from Craigslist (people have trees cut) or from the companies that do tree work. It's a little known fact that tree companies must pay to dump the rounds that they haul away or get rid of the wood somehow for free (like dump at my place).

When Craigslist first started, they got in so much trouble with peeps just taking trailers out of driveways, and, BBQ's from the porch. LOL

    They are much better now.

Craigslist is good for looking for people that need a job. Facebook, not so much, unless your not a racist and have a sense of humour!
