    Battling the heat..

Running 4 workstations and one laptop upstairs in my office is a bit getting on the warm side.. especially when the heat index outside has been around 106' or more.. I usually like to keep them on, because I'm on and off them during the day and night. I'm going to try to use power management and have them drop into sleep mode. Any of you guys use Power management on your workstations?

I drop down to 1 rig for the summer, I'm sure you could cut at least 1 rig out, have one that runs hotter than the rest?

Two of them pump out more heat then the other two... About not running one of them.. funny that you mention that, because there is one workstation that I was going to reinstall the O.S. on, and I decided to keep it off-line for the time being.

Since the move into the new house, main rigs and *nix firewalls are down. Currently just running on a tomato router feeding the whole house. Wireless coverage is fine over 3 stories and 3,400 sq ft.

However, soon I'll be done with most of the work inside the house, painting, arranging, misc updates here 'n there, and I'll turn towards my network again. My office isn't even setup. I plan on going with SuperMicro 1U servers with the Atoms in there. Low AC consumption, low heat output, low noise. Have a 12u wall mount rack setup (MidAtlantic) that I'll hang in the basement.

    I favor this model:SUPERMICRO SYS-5015A-PHF 1U Barebone Server Intel Atom D510 processor
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-332-_-Product

It's the better model with the Intel gigabit NICs...far superior performance over the lesser models Realtec NICs when it comes to a *nix firewalls.

The Atom d525 should be out soon..hopefully SuperMicro will have that model ready about the time I'm going to order up gear for that project.

I have the SuperMicro in my shopping cart from NewEgg.
I decided to change the motherboard to the front panel model...
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811152107

I got the Atom D510 mobo combo with the remote management IPMI 2.0 option and dual Intel gigabit LANs
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813182238

And a Seagate Pipeline drive...a "green" hard drive designed for ultra low power consumption, quietness, and low heat output.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148556

    Total is 359.97
I'm going to check on our memory stick at the office, that mobo takes DDR2 SODIMM 667...which we often have leftover sticks for due to laptop memory upgrades we do. If not I'll have to order some up from Crucial or the Egg.

Going to mount my Middle Atlantic 12U rack up in the basement this weekend and probably get some CAT runs going. Still not sure which distro I'll run on that unit...PFSense, Astaro, or Untangle.

And then when the Atom D525 comes out....I'll probably pick up another set like above..but with the 525..and make that a little ESXi box.

You should install IPFire on it.. It's nice to have Snort signatures that you can update on a regular basis for the NIDS part.

The VMWare ESXi box would be a very smart move.. Virtualization is growing at a rapid rate.. I think because in the long run, it cuts costs down.

Are your LAN drops going to be all Gigabit Ethernet?

Yeah most of the distros have Snort...Untangle has it built in with auto updating. Untangle has it preconfigured for you also....as most people who install Snort into distros never actually get to enabling it and configuring it..which is usually required.

I'm sure Astaro has it preconfigured also.

Yeah I'll make my runs with 5e 'n 6 (whatever I have the most of onhand at the time)...although currently I don't have a gigabit switch for home. I really don't do LAN transfers..it's just internet and print sharing.

Time to buy a gigabit switch if your buying all of that nice rack equipment, you should swing for a gbe switch.

Send me one for a stocking stuffer!
Projects around our new house have me spending 4 grand here and there in other spots...not much spare change around these days to afford a beast like that.

    Installed Untangle...ran great.
This morning installed Astaro HGW...appears to run fine, will probably use that at home for a bit. May also get PFSense on there down the road.
