    Comcast Business Internet service setup

I got new business class internet service from comcast but do not know how to set it up on my router and server. As a matter of fact I had internet connection from another ISP and I thought that easily I can dicounct the previous ISP cable out and insert the comcast cable instead but when I do so I do not have internet in my network. I have all ip, gateway, DNS, ... from comcast. Can anybody help me to set it up on my router/server please? Sorry I am very new to networking so please be very clear and simple while helping.

What do you have for a router?

Comcast supplies you with a combo modem/router, an "SMC Gateway".
By default it pulls an IP from Comcast, and runs NAT, 10.1.10.xxx, running DHCP. What we usually do is take our own router, and using the account information sheet they gave you when they set it up, assign your own router with the static WAN IP information...your first static IP addres, subnet, default gateway, and DNS..all of that is on the sheet of paper that they gave you.

Plus your routers WAN interface into one of the 4 LAN ports of the SMC gateway. Using a laptop or a PC, plug that into one of the other LAN ports of the SMC, and that PC will pickup a 10.1.10.100 IP address...log into the SMC gateways web admin interface at 10.1.10.1, username highspeed, password cusadmin or custadmin. Look around the settings, find where you can disable the firewall settings on it. Now your routers WAN interface is wide open on its public IP address, and you can manage everything from your own router from now on.

    thanks for your reply

Thanks a lot for your reply. I did disable the firewall on the comcast gateway. Can you tell me what is the next step? Should I do something on my router or anything I should do on the server itself. I have all those information from comcast like DNS primary and secondary, Subnet mask and the range of static ips.

On the information on your sheet, say you have a first usable IP address of 75.145.215.221 with a 30 bit subnet mask (255.255.255.252)....and a default gateway of 75.145.215.222

...you'd enter that into your routers WAN setup as a static configuration.

You should be able to leave the rest of your routers configuration as the same....same NAT, same port forwarding, etc.

    more problem

it did not work. It seems that I did not give you the right information. As matter of fact all the devices I have here are switches and on none of them is written Router.

Let me tell you what exactly I have here. The internet connection from the comcast will go to a switch (netgear FS605 v3) and from there it will go to a watchguard (firebox x550e) and from there it is back to another switch (HP procurve 1700-8) from here it is distributed to the server and other users in the local network. I wonder on which of these devices I should enter the received info form comcast.

I know that I am very new to the networking but please bear with me.

    more question

I want to add that there are more than a switch since they are small switches and I had to connect many station to the network. Therefore I am going to throw away all those switches and buy a new one with like 24 ports or more. Do your recommend one? or generally I need just a switch or router?

I have not worked with them, but I'd guess the Watchguard firebox x550e is your router/firewall. You log into its web admin and set it up with the internet connection.

    thanks a lot

I put the watchguard aside and it is not in the system anymore.

I could set the comcast info (ip, dns1, dns2, gateway,...) on my router now my router is broadcasting internet wired and wireless. When I connect a standalone laptop to the router I have the internet properly but when I connect the router to the ethernet switch I do not have internet in the network.

the lan setting on my server has internal ip 192.168.10.108 and default gateway is 192.168.10.1 when I set it pickup automatic ip then I have internet. but only on the server not in the network. This way the connection of the server and internet is disconnected. Can you tell me how can I set it to have the internet and server connection at the same time?

OK what is "on my router now..my router is broadcasting".......what is this device? Is this another router you have? I see above you mentioned a Netgear switch, and an HP Procurve switch.

Your server and your network...are they static assigned? How many server(s), and how many workstations/laptops/clients/networked printers?

Are you running active directory? Is your server normally handling DHCP for your network?

I have 2 servers one exchange server the other one ftp server . Exchange server is important for me. I can ignore ftp server by now. How can find out if the server is static assigned? how can I know if my server normally handling DHCP for my network?

and for your information I put all those procurve and netgear switches away and instead I am using a 24 port netgear switch. I also added a linksys wireless router (wrt54GS v5) to the system.

To be brief the internet cable from the dsl modem goes to router and from there it goes to the switch and all network stations as well as the exchange server is connected to the other ports of the switch. But still I do not have internet on my server and client computers. I think that the problem is the ip setting on the server. The server itself has manual ip which is 192.168.10.108 and the gateway is 192.168.10.1 but all the client computers are getting ip automatically.

If I set the server ip to automatic then I can have internet on the server but the connection of the server and the network will be gone and none of the client machine will have internet.
