    Red face Another Zonealarm questoin!!!

I have downloaded the regular Zonealarm, basically everything runs fine, but here is the problem. I have both Instand Messenger and Internet Explorer on the programs list to allow all the time. But frequently, every few minutes ZoneAlarm will block them both, at the same time, for no apparent reason. They are still on the always alow, and it is not set on lock mode. It just denies them access. Then a minute later it allows them again, and I havent changed anything. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

Uninstall zone alarm, then reinstall it. sounds like you got a bad install. If this keeps happening then do some adjestments to zonealarm. This should solve your problem ! I use the explorer and aol instant messanger and have no problems with while running zonealarm. And I have zonealarm on the highest settings for security. Hope this Helps you!

Listen to onetrueday, and save yourself a lot of work. Go to ZA's page and get the instructions. Good Luck

I have a ton of experience in this as I have uninstalled and reinstalled ZA free and Pro many times before discovering the secret.
First you need to shutdown ZA frome the Icon and then cont/alt/delete it and the true vector service.
Uncheck Mini-log,truevector,and ZA in Msconfig and reboot.
Then uninstall from the program and then make sure it is gone from control panel-add/remove program list.
Then use your file and folder find command to find and delete
    MINILOG.EXE
    and the internet log file.
go through explorer, windows, system, and make sure that the Internet log folder and MINILOG.EXE file are gone, then reboot again.
Now you can safely install whichever ZA you have.
    A word of advice:
Getting a firewall from a warez site is like buying your deadbolt from a burglar!

    Good Luck

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling my ZoneAlarm, I also emailed their tech support. The tech support said I needed to change my computers internet security to medium, so I can renew my ip address with DHCP I believe. I did this, but periodically, ZoneAlarm blocks AOL Instant Messenger, Napster, and Explorer at the same time.. for a period of about 10 seconds, then I can connect again as usual, this happens every few minutes. Maybe this will help you guys be able to answer

I haven't used the free version, only Pro. You can find out which ports each proggie is using and open those ports, but you may sacrifice security in doing so... I can't help but feel that there is a device conflict or an installation problem...Without being there with you to "play with your puter" heheheehehh, it is really hard to say.

I get a similar problem with ZoneAlarm Pro. Even though I give a program full rights, it still blocks it. Here's the log that it gives me:
    "
The firewall has blocked Internet access to ftp.ca.com (141.202.215.12) (FTP Data) from your computer [TCP Flags: AS].

    User: X
    Program: AutoDownload
    Time: 29/12/2000 14:52:26
    "

My security settings are both high.

Ya I noticed that if I do drop it down to Medium, it will work. Is there anything I can do to make it still work on High? Or just whenever I need to do that, drop it down to Medium.

I can make ZoneAlarm work withoyut any interuptions if I place internet security on medium, however, I need it on high to block some type of scan my computer is getting that also boots me off Napster and AOl, ZoneAlarm stops this scan, but hen blocks me.. kind of a trade off.

I keep Local on Medium and Internet on High. I haven't had any problems with it like this...You can block specific ports or series of ports with ZA by going to Security>Advanced tab> Custom Settings and look for ports to block, then enter port number(s)Let me know...

Ya I noticed that too that when it set on Medium, I have no problems but when I boost it to High, it blocks some programs. Kind of a pain eventhough you give the program full rights. Ah well, maybe in the next version *hope*.

I get this same problem and have to lower my Internet security setting to Medium to allow access to the Internet. I don't know what it is but every now and again it blocks access. Has anyone successfully figured out the cure for this?

I don't know if I found a solution to the infamous ZA Pro not allowing Internet access while the Internet setting is in High but this works for me. I found this in the FAQs at ZoneLabs:

    18. My Internet Server is being blocked but I do not get any kind of message from ZoneAlarm Pro.
Any software that loads before ZoneAlarm or ZoneAlarm Pro does not have its initial connection "seen", and so it doesn't get its program permissions applied. If you are running at High security, it will be blocked -- because the default behavior at High security is to block anything that isn't specifically allowed. If you are at Medium or Low security, the connection is ordinarily allowed -- because the connection (or listening) was already established, and the firewall only blocks NetBIOS at Medium, and is not active at Low security.

That being said, if you know what ports your web server needs right at startup, ZoneAlarm Pro gives you the flexibility to open those specific ports by using the Advanced Security settings. For example, most web servers serve on port 80, and it's very likely that when your web server starts up at Windows boot time, one of the first things it does is listen on port 80.

Go to the Security panel, Advanced settings, Internet Zone Custom Settings tab. Under High Security Settings for Internet Zone, click "Allow Incoming TCP Ports", and specify port 80 where indicated. This keeps port 80 open for inbound packets, independent of any program permissions. Therefore, even if your web server loads before TrueVector, it should be able to use port 80 to serve web pages.

I did the probe ports test at "Shields Up" and all ports reported "stealth" with the exception of port 80 (HTTP). It reported as existing but closed. Before when I had to run ZA in Internet Medium they all tested "closed". So, I think this is better now and I have access to the Internet with my setting on High. My question, is this okay with that port 80 allowing incoming packets and allow Internet access? Thanks.

I get the problem that even if I give a program complete access rights, it is still blocked. Only certain programs tho and I can still access the internet. ZoneAlarm's a good program, but it's a pain in the ass.

Okay, forget it. I thought I hit a gold mine for a minute. IE is back to it's normal self and disallowing Internet access. Netscape doesn't have a problem working with the the Internet setting on High. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

In order to be stealth from an attack, your Internet MUST be set to high, Local is OK at med. Read this thread as I posted the most likely solution for you guys...

My problems are still there with Local set to Medium...I was hoping that would be it. I have another question tho, Do these problems exist with the free version as well? Because if it's only with the Pro version, why not just scrap it and go with the free?
