i'm not really up on laptop drives, but i do know that some of the new SSD drives are very fast, so it would depend on which drive ya get i suppose.

The drive I listed seems fast and I can get it for $200 after the coupon...but can someone clarify what is the Sustained Write?

SSDs are very fast, but in the long haul, so far, imho unreliable, at least not as reliable as standard drives. Good article here w/ links to pros & cons:

No one has any right to force data on you
and command you to believe it or else.
If it is not true for you, it isn't true.

If you're currently running a 5400rpm you could try and 7200rpm model. You should really see a difference if that is the case.

    HDD read/write speed test?

I'm wondering if there is any nice tool (and hopefully some tutorial pages
if you know) to test my HDDs on Ubuntu 8.04? - just trying to test and
compare **actual** read/write speed among different HDDs attached to it.

I'm looking for a tool that has nice GUI features, other than something like
"hdparm -i /dev/sda" kind of stuffs. It would be nice if the tool can
estimate the number of hours that the HDDs can healthly survive.

Now how do I overclock my HDD for higher transfer speeds?
