Question Shutting off modem with computer?

It just occured to me, is there any downside to shutting down the modem with the computer other than having to wait for it to sync up? Is there any way to put a router between the DSL line and the modem so hackers wouldn't even be able to ping the modem?

I use RR and when I first got it I shut down the modem just to keep it from heating up tomuch, s.o.b gets pretty hot but I dont really care to much if it kicks out on me the cable co. and get me a new one or fix it or they will be the ones loseing money. When your computers down you dont have a ip. It's the computer with the ip (I think) and not the modem even so if its the other way around they wonted find a computer at that ip if your computer was turned off.

    Cool

I have had RR for about 8 months now,I have kept all 3 computers on now for about 3 years and i have never turned my 3com modem off, with no problems with anything.actually, electronics get more wear and tear from getting turned off and on more often.its like the old story of the light bulb that never gets turned off lasts for ever.

I'm not concerned with wear and tear. I was thinking if you shut down the PC the hacker can no longer ping the NIC but they can still ping the modem. I figured if I shut if off it would lessen my exposure. Besides, it takes about the same amount of time for the computer to boot up as the modem to sync up.

the cable guy told me that if I wanted to extra cautious, to disconnect cable from the back of the modem that goes to your ethernet card, and let everything else run, if you wish. Personally, I shut everything down when I'm finished. I'm damn SURE nothing gets in that way.

RR says to always leave modem on. If it seems that the modem is hot to the touch that is normal. these modems are built for this kind of stuff, don't worry about it. anyway if it overheats, they will replace it, RR will anyway.

If I reboot my modem once in a while it seems to run faster, I should test this though.

Leave it on . When the computer is off no one can scan it.I have had mine for 4 years and never turned it off rr told me to leave it on. I have never had a problem with it.I was told they were made to stay on. To much shutting them down would warp there circutboard. They are made to run hot.

get a router with a firewall like linksys and you wont have to worry about it at all.
