Free program to list all wireless users and what they are currently doing on my Windows PC?
Is there a freely downloadable program that will list all users and what
they're doing on my Windows computer?
Sometimes, when I try to shut dow or disable my wireless connection, I get
a message telling me someone else is using my Windows XP Home computer. But
there's nobody else. There's no other user. I don't share resources (not
knowingly anyway). I have WEP encryption.
How can I tell who or what is causing this wireless network connection
error?

When I try to disable the wireless connection, I get
Error Disabling Connection
It is not possible to disable the connection at this time.
This connection may be using one or more protocols that do not support
Plug-and-Play, or it may have been initiated by another user or the system
account.
When I try to shutdown the Windows PC, I get
Windows
Other people are logged on to this computer.
Shutting down Windows might cause them to lose data.
Do you want to continue shutting down?
The Sysinternals free process explorer has a "users" menu which should tell
me who is logged in. I just was able to shutdown (so the user must have
logged off in the interim) so I don't see any users but now I know what to
look for.

XP home is single-user, two interactive sessions cannot happen at the
same time.
Most likely, you've enabled "fast user switching" and forgotten that
you've already logged on. That feature is a bug and a security loophole.
Disable it, and use normal logins.

Thats just a bug in windows. It means "your wireless connection is still
in use". Probably you have something like a microsoft update running in
the background and it won't let you shutdown or disconnect from the net.

Switch to WPA - WEP is very insecure.

Windows has one built in - task manager. You should expect to see your
user name running some programmes, and a lot being run by system accounts.

OK. I'll look up Windows fast user switching and disable it.

I see myself, and only myself, so, I guess, I'm ok.

WEP encryption is hopelessly broken. Switch to WPA-AES now.

Without knowing anything about your computer other than the fact that
you use WEP encryption, I'd say that you're computer is infested with
malware -- viruses, spyware, and the like. Download a Spybot Search
and Destroy and Adaware and set them loose on your computer.

You've never mentioned what OS you're using. WEP has also been shown to be
not so secure. Use netstat to see if anyone is hooked up to your PC. Go to
Run and type in cmd. It will bring up a command window. Type in netstat /a
and it will bring up if you have anyone logged on to your PC.

Only one can be active at one time, but more than one can "happen" at
the same time.

It won't be Microsoft Update. That message will only occur if there is
an open share. My guess it that the computer has been compromised.
Windows 98 is a sitting duck.

Amen, although it may be slamming the barn door long after the cows are
gone.

You only see the other users if you check that option, and even then
you'll just see logged in users, not active shares.

To display all open network shares, open a DOS command window and type
(followed by the Enter key):
net share

Then
net sessions
to see who is using resources on your computer.

My guess(tm) is that your computer has been seriously compromised.
Run good current anti-virus and anti-spyware.
Then install and run a good software firewall.

Excellent. Highly recommended. Use it.
Also check with these Sysinternals utilities:
* LogonSessions
* PsLoggedOn
* RootkitRevealer.
* ShareEnum
