Just bought a Nikon D40 - Anyone else?

I've been wanting to make the leap from point and shoot to a DSLR for a while, but price has been holding me back. I used my friend's D40 at an event yesterday and decided I wanted one too. I'll soon be lusting after high end lenses and that is where the real performance (and money) are at.

I like many others tend to research stuff to death and wrestled between the Canon Rebel XTi and the Nikon, but after handling both and considering lens options I went with the Nikon.

Anyone have any experience with the D40?

I bought it online from Cameta Camera in New York. They have a brick & Mortar store so I called them to order it cuz it gives me a warm & fuzzy.

I could have gotten all I bought locally for over $200 more, but why? It's my hard earned dough. I got the following:

Nikon D40 camera with 18x55mm AFS lens
2GB ultra fast 150x SD secure SD card
USB 2.0 card reader (don't need at home, but for travel might be nice)
Nikon camera case
Card wallet
UV filter
extra Nikon battery
cleaning kit
extra 2 year Nikon warranty
3 day UPS delivery

Grand total of $618 to the door. Local stores want $549(+8.25% tax here) for the camera alone. Now the lusting after lenses begin.

i got the D40X over boxing day sales for 750$. The only diff is that it has 10.1megapixels and 3 frams per second. Oh ya my flash only works at 1/250 where yours works up to 1/500 of a second. Its a very nice camera! You will enjoy it as have me and my wife have.

I must have went back & forth between the D40 and D40X a hundred times. In this particular price range, megapixels mean nothing to me and with 6.1 you can still print nice 12x18s which I will never do anyway. The D40 is twice as sensitive to light which is huge, plus like mentioned the D40 easily shoots at 1/500 with flash with no loss of performance. My personal feeling is to save a few bucks on the body and save up for the eventual awesome lens(es) I am going to want.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Nikon DSLR.

This is actually a prize for the wife! I already got a guitar. I figured I'd spend the money they paid me for not taking a single sick day last year.

Just got my camera off the UPS truck an hour a go. I have to read the guide and learn how to tweak it! Here are a couple pics. Man are there a lot of user controls.



I only show this one because the fan was spinning on high. None of my point & shoots were fast enough to even come close to stopping the action!







Can't wait to experiment with macro and other settings.
