Walmart Gives Up: No Stores For New York City

We've often wondered what force of nature could finally frustrate Walmart and now we have the answer: New York City. From the New York Times:

Frustrated by a bruising, and so far unsuccessful battle to open its first discount store in the nation's largest city, Wal-Mart's chief executive said yesterday, "I don't care if we are ever here."

    H. Lee Scott Jr., the chief executive of the nation's largest retailer, said that trying to conduct business in New York was so expensive— and exasperating —that "I don't think it's worth the effort."

Although the major opposition to Walmart has come from blue-collar workers and union organizers who fear competition from non-union Walmart will force other stores to cut benefits and lower wages, Walmart's CEO blames New York snobbery for the defeat:

Don't need it either! The nearest Walmart is in Secaucus, NJ, just over the Lincoln Tunnel, that's close enough. Real Estate is at a prime as it is, they'd a never won, they were smart in giving up.

I guess Walmart is more suited for smaller towns. It provides very much needed jobs.

There are many that would disagree with you. I for one love Walmart, their prices are ridiculously cheap, but yeah, they do treat their employees like chit and there are many that refuse to shop there, which I respect. I hate the hippie bastards that try and make you feel guilty for shopping there....F Dat!

No, walmarts demsie is need for smaller towns so that that other stores will pop up and with walmart not using its evil ways to make places sell to them cheaper than any other store the other stores that were losing money could again compete.

The other shops never make it here, even befor Walmart showed up. I would like to see small business grow and thrive but we have a needs and cheap goods and jobs is a greater boon to this place than the small business. This a very hard place to open your own shop most don't ever make it.

Walmart gets cheap goods because they force the warehosues and companies they buy from to sell items below their cost.

They are a corrupt and greedy bunch.

Wal-Mart has a few stores on Long Island. You couldn't get me to install another PBX, Network or vSat on that island as a contractor for Wally World.

All I will say is thank god I was a Union Card holder at the time.

    Good.

NY doesn't need it, and NY doesn't want it, so it's not as if people are missing out on anything.
