    Bizarre Problem

I've just run a port scanning test at "Shield's Up" with all firewalls disabled (both software and my modem firewall). I do not have a router.

    This is what it says...

    Under file sharing tab:

"Your Internet port 139 does not appear to exist!"

"Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer."

    Under Common Ports:

    ALL stealthed...even port 80 (http).

    Under all service ports:

    ALL 1056 ports are stealthed.

Okay....How in the heck is this possible. Seriously, I've checked and rechecked. Every firewall that I know of is disabled. I have contacted my ISP "Embarq" and they claim that they are not filtering anything. After talking with 2 techies...they were out of guesses. So many games, services, programs ect. will not make connection, and yet here I am...surfing the internet!

You guys are pros...what is this?

Disabling your software firewall after it has been opened at Windows Startup does not mean all ports that were protected are opened. Usually they remain closed.

To test, disable software firewall from Windows Startup and reboot comp.

Disabled was the wrong word...I uninstalled zonealarm. I've rebooted several times since. Same thing--perfect stealth. I rechecked the windows firewall and it is completely disabled (and I rebooted just to make sure)

The interesting thing is...when i go into "safe mode" these programs will connect.

    Any other ideas?

Oh... and I ran a little utility called "What's running" and I only have to programs that launch at startup "ctfmon.exe" and "adobeversioncue"

    Also, according to "shields up",

Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer.
All attempts to get any information from your computer have FAILED. (This is very uncommon for a Windows networking-based PC.) Relative to vulnerabilities from Windows networking, this computer appears to be VERY SECURE since it is NOT exposing ANY of its internal NetBIOS networking protocol over the Internet.

I get this message too because I have removed NetBIOS from the properties of my TCP connection.

    Here is an update.

I completely reset my system back to factory settings. On a Dell this means hitting crt+F11. Now, in it's virginal state, I went back to "shield's up" and I am STILL running completely stealth with no firewall activated. How is this possible?

have you clear your internet explorer history and cookies and or what ever web browser your useing and go to your cmd prompt by typeing cmd at the run box and then in the cmd box type ipconfig/flushdns make sure your put the / after ipconfig do that about 3 times then type ipconfig/release
wait about 30 secs then type ipconfig/renew this is all done in the cmd window and then go to your setting then network connections from the start menu go to the one in the list that your using then u will see two tabe go to the support tab then run the repair operation on the tabe it only take a few seconds it will also tell you if it has problems doing so that means there realy is somthing wrong with your isp dns=domain name server kinda like the phone book of the internet whenever your dns cashe gets clooged stuff can happen like that

What does IPCONFIG have to do with shields up? Also.../renew already includes /release in it.

Porksoda...what make/modem broadband modem do you have? And honestly...you don't want netbios to be avail on the internet anyways.
