this girl needs some help <sigh>

DSL is running slow. its slow to start with (the cheapest option = 750K, so thats what i got. i think it may be time to shop around for a bit more speed.)

anyways, for the last two weeks its been running slow. 250K - 350K / 20k-50K.

i cleaned up things, checked the modem and router, called verizon tech support. she told me that things are running fine and full speed ahead when she checked the line. she told me to call the laptop manufacturer, which i am loath to do.

so im check with you all here to see if you have a suggestion. from what i have gathered you may want the following information:

    « SpeedGuide.net TCP Analyzer Results »
    Tested on: 03.07.2007 18:40
    IP address: 72.92.xxx.xx

    TCP options string: 020405ac01010402
    MSS: 1452
    MTU: 1492
TCP Window: 17424 (multiple of MSS)
    RWIN Scaling: 0
    Unscaled RWIN : 17424
    Reccomended RWINs: 63888, 127776, 255552, 511104
    BDP limit (200ms): 697kbps (87KBytes/s)
    BDP limit (500ms): 279kbps (35KBytes/s)
    MTU Discovery: ON
    TTL: 112
    Timestamps: OFF
    SACKs: ON
    IP ToS: 00000000 (0)

let me know if you need anything else.

as always, your help is greatly appreciated.

Do a tracert to www.yahoo.com and post.

To do a tracert, click 'Start' and then 'Run'. Type "cmd" into the box and click 'ok'.

A DOS black screen will appear. Type after the C:\>

    tracert www.yahoo.com

    and press enter key

When test is completed, move mouse cusor to the DOS black screen, click right and choose 'select all'.

Move mouse cursor to the Quick Reply box of this forum, click right and 'paste'.

Seems your router and modem are being affected by strong electromagnetic interference from some nearby electrical device.

Ensure they are placed a few feet away from all electrical devices, including themselves. If you are using a cordless phone, disconnect it and use a line phone instead.

wow. interesting. there is a cordless phone nearby so i will move that. the phone has been very crackly lately, so i bet you are right. ill do some rearranging and then retest the speed. and report back, of course.

thank you very much for your time.

    hmm. not much luck.

i think i have a combo modem/router (westell 327W). so i cant seperate them. but i did move the phone (and unplugged it for good measure) and the answering machine.

since you didnt mention them, i assume a lamp wouldnt throw things off, but would my laptop or its ac adaptor. those are the only things that are in the vicinity of the router/modem.

    ill keep trying.

If the lamp is using a filament light bulb, then it will not emit interference. If the bulb is those energy saving or florescent type, they will have a starter that will emit interference.

What you can do is to remove all other electrical devices near the router/modem and do a tracert to see if all 3 ping times in hop 1 becomes <1ms.

Then add back one device at a time and check with tracert again. This way, you can isolate the cause.

AC adapter, when powered would be. Laptop will not.

Also, do not place router/modem on top of the comp tower because the power supply box of the comp is mounted at the inside top of the tower.

The cracking sound you heard when using the cordless phone means it picked up the interference as well.
