What is the difference between domain and local?

    Hi there

Can somebody please tell me the difference between domain and local in the context of whether "you login on a domain or on the local machine"?

Iv looked on google but i'm a bit confused about what the difference is. I could really do with an example of both.

    Thanks alot

It's about where the user accounts are kept...domain users are users that are entered into the domain users group on a domain controller...objects in active directory. Operating systems that support domains..such as Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional...can log into a "domain"..and allow these users desktop access...and access to network resources. These domain users can be centrally managed at the server.

Once a machine is set to log into a domain..it usually is never logged in locally again.

Logging In locally would be if you are not connected to a domain (Almost 99% of all home user computers) and the users are on the computer that you are logging into.
