    Wireless Zero config

I'm hoping someone will have an answer to this question...

In order for me to sign on to the internet I have to get to the W/less zero
    conf and click start. (start/run/services/)

I have other issues but I'm hoping I can get this out of the way, it started
after asking lynksys for help almost a year ago! I'm running windows xp on
    a laptop. The wireless is a wrt54gs v1.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

    Click on your start button...run....
and in the blank field..type in winver
    Click OK
If you have Windows XP..you'll see
    Microsoft Windows
Version 5.1 (blah blah blah blah and hopefully service pack 2)

Or...if you have classic desktop running, and you have a My Computer icon on your desktop, right click My Computer, select properties. You'll see something similar there.

    Ahh..OK...next step....

    Start==>Run==> and type in services.msc
this brings up the services management console....
Click on the Standard tab on the bottom to make it easier to view...
alphabetically, scroll down the list to Wireless Zero Config...and notice towards the right, you have columns. On the WZC column for Startup type...what it is, manual or automatic?

Can't you just set it to automatic?

Wondering if they had you use the Linksys utility to control your adapter...I prefer using Windows.

Double click your wireless network connection that's down in your systray (near the Windows clock..lower right corner of screen)
Click on the properties button..lower left corner of that window
Click on the "Wireless networks" tab up top
Is there a checkmark in the box for "Use Windows to configure..." ? If not..put on in there. Click OK, then close.

    Hmmm.....
Are you running on batteries when this happens?
Does this only happen when your first power up? As in..once you set it..you're good until your power down and start up again?

Yes, once I sign on, it's fine. Crazy stuff! Got anything else
for me to check? I appreciate your help.

What wireless adapter are you using in the laptop?
I'd see if there are any updated drivers for it.
Does your PC have current antivirus software?
Are you free from malware (adware/spyware)
Perhaps try running this TCP/Winsock repair utility...

The adapter might be built into your laptop, such as Intel Centrino.
Or...if you have a PCMCIA wireless card that you installed....

Double Click that wireless connection in your systray again...click on the Properties button...you'll see that green icon in the box for "Connect Using"...and a name brand/model of adapter.

Chanvces are the comp came w/ 3rd party wireless connection software. These 3rd party apps alwas shut down windows wireless zero config when they load. At some point during all of your troubleshooting you managed to be able to check the box to "let windows manage this connection". And that setting has stuck. However, every time you reboot the 3rd party wifi connection software gets loaded and it will shut down wireless zero. If this is the case, the solution is:

    1. check Start > All Programs > Startup and de;lete any shortcut there for wireless connection.
    2. if no joy, edit the registry or use msconfig to stop the software from loading at boot.
No one has any right to force data on you
and command you to believe it or else.
If it is not true for you, it isn't true.

What make/model laptop do you have?

When you have a checkmark in the Windows Zero Config to use windows to control the adapter, I've not seen 3rd party softwrae trump that..I mostly work with IBM and HP laptops...but it's certainly possible for some 3rd party software to do that.

So lets see what make/model laptop you have, can figure out what the "name" of it's 3rd party wireless utility is..and probably find it in the Startup section of MSCONFIG..and remove the checkmark.
