    Backingup Quickbooks files

Ok my mom has a business at which she uses quickbooks on a really OLD computer with Win98 on it.. well the file for backup is over 40Megs, the computer doesn't have ethernet,no cdburner, my flash USBdrive won't work since its not 2.0 (I don't think) so I'm lookin at backup options.. I have her new computer here which she bought I'm just cleaning it up from all the Dell junk on it before I do anything. I was thinking of takign the HD out the old comp and slaving it into the new one.. ideas? Thoughts? suggestions? and info on either

My favorite for Quickbooks machines is still a good old Zip drive. Win98 huh? Wow..she must be still using an old version of Quickbooks..the new ones won't even install on anything less than 2K.

Anyways...snag an internal IDE zip drive. Nice 'n reliable..slave it off IDE with the cd-rom. And do an internal Quickbooks backup to "F" drive..or whatever the zip obtains.

where do I obtain a IDE zip drive?

What about dropping in a PCI ethernet card and then just upload everything to the other computer?

Iomega Zip drives are widely available...online or through most major retail outlets.

You could backup to the other PC across a network..yes. Either UNC path or map a drive letter. Generally it's safer to have financial info backed up on removable storage.

Wait I have an idea.. I'll use my USB flashdrive to it..but I need the drivers for it since the comp has Win98 on it.. anyone know where to get the drivers I need? I'll just burn them on a CDROM and load them to transfer the files over to the flashdrive for backing itup.

To MOVE the QBF files to new comp: Take the drive out of the old comp and connect as a slave to new comp. Just connect cables & let drive hang, no need to actually mount it w/ screws. Copy over files to partition on new comp. From then on, use the usb flash as storage for backups or use cdrw.

Oh you're transferring from old PC..I misunderstood you question when skimming the post..."Backing up" means backing up on a daily or weekly basis to me, not transferring.

A one time transfer...yeah, only takes a few minutes to pull source drive, slave it to new PC..copy over what you need.

ok the older comp is set with IDE cable for the drive at which I can't use on the newer comp... I guess the best thing to do is just get the USB driver I need for my flash drive to hookup to it and then backup to it and add the files to the new one. Anyone know of where to get the driver for it to work from Win98?

Why not? Just set the new PCs CD to master, the old 98 boxes HD to slave...and share that second IDE controller.

Granted most new PCs run their HD's on SATA now..but their CD's are still usually old IDE.

What is the brand of the USB drive? Can't help with drivers if we don't know what it is.

Pulling and slaving hard drive...I prefer that...I know I'll be done in 15 minutes. It's a 100% certain thing.

yeah but my mom is driving me nuts about not "screwing up" something doing that..she's scared to death since its years of information...so to make her feel better I'd rather just pull it off on a flash drive but I need that damn driver to make it work LOL and I'm not sure to which one I've searched and found will do it or what.

The 2.0 Gizmo 512meg Crucial is USB 2.0. Windows 98 does not support USB 2.0 UNLESS you install a USB 2.0 PCI card. The card will come with drivers. The USB drive itself required no driver at all anyway, other than generic usb drivers that come with later op sys or the usb add on card.

Easier way to do it would be to download the latest Knoppix Linux Live CD ISO file, burn to a cdr & boot the 98 box with it. Plug in the usb drive & xfer the files from 98 hard drive to the usb device.

    From Crucial:

Can I use the Gizmo!™ drive with Windows™ NT or Windows 98?

Unfortunately, the Gizmo! USB flash drive is not supported for the Microsoft™ Windows NT operating system or for the Windows 98 and earlier operating systems. You can use the Gizmo! drive in any USB-enabled computer (desktop, notebook, Mac, PC) running Windows 2000 and above or Mac® OS 9.1 and above. The Gizmo! is also compatible with the Linux 2.2.19 kernel and above.

But IMO it's safest, surest method. If someone came up to me and said "I need THIS off of this old computer, onto this new computer, I need it in a RUSH..like NOW...and I can't afford to lose it"..this is the method I'd used. I've used this method for like a decade...several hundred times probably. Ah well.

Ok its done... I had to keep the drive located in the older comp to power it cause the New Dell didn't have a molex connector But after 30mins and remembering Ohh DAMN! I forgot to move the jumper over I finally got it slaved in so I could drag the files over.
