    Angry HELP - download lower than upload. Very slow!

    can someone help me tweak my pc please. I have just bought a new router and am experiencing very low speeds. My download speeds are lower than my upload speeds. Using the current settings, i get download = 216kbps upload = 241.60kbps. This isn't normal for a 1Mb connection I've done a speed test on my laptop [via wireless and on same router] and i get normal speeds. I just get rubbish speeds on this pc via ethernet and on same router.

    Please help

    CONNECTION
    PPPOA [i think. My isp tells me to configure my router as PPPOA. but i connect through the internet via a router and pc is hooked upto it via an ethernet cable. So i'm not sure]

    ISP and ADVERTISED SPEED
    ISP is Pipex [uk isp] and i'm on a 1Mb/256Kb connection. Not sure what that means in kbps.

    CURRENT SETTINGS
    I've used command prompt to ping a site and have found that my max mtu is 1492 as this is the highest number i can use without the ping telling me of fragmented packets.

    TCP options string = 020405ac0103030301010402

    MTU = 1492
    MTU is optimized for PPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for optimal throughput.
    MSS = 1452
    MSS is optimized for PPPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising your MTU value.
    Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 511104
    RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 3 bits (scale factor of 6)
    Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 63888

    RWIN is a multiple of MSS
    Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
    511104 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8) <-- current value
    255552 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
    127776 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
    63888 (MSS x 44)
    bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

    Your TCP Window limits you to: 20444.16 kbps (2555.52 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
    Your TCP Window limits you to: 8177.664 kbps (1022.208 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
    MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
    Time to live left = 59 hops
    TTL value is ok.
    Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
    Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
    IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000 (0)

    MY OS
    xp home sp1

    ROUTER
    draytek 2800

    What modem do you own? You could have a brouter mdoem plus router does the speed hit where it should with out the router?

    Try theast your rwin is way to high

    Try thease in the sg optmizer below me to download and install

    General Settings tab:
    Custom settings - check
    Modify All Network Adapters - check
    network adapter selection - your NIC
    MTU 1500
    TTL - 64
    TCP Receive Window -63888
    MTU Discovery - Yes
    Black Hole Detect - No
    Selective Acks - Yes
    Max Duplicate ACKs - 2
    TCP 1323 Options:
    Windows Scaling - not checked
    Timestamps - uncheck
    Advanced Settings tab:
    Max Connections per Server - 10
    Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 20
    LocalPriority - 5
    Host Priority - 6
    DNSPriority - 7
    NetbtPriority - 8
    Lan Browsing speedup - optimized
    QoS: NonBestEffortLimit - 0
    ToS: DisableUserTOSSetting - 0
    ToS: DefaultTOSValue - 240
    MaxNegativeCacheTtl - 0
    NetFailureCacheTime - 0
    NegativeSOACache Time - 0
    LAN Request Buffer Size - 32768
    Then select "Apply Changes" and reboot to take effect
    b]VERY IMPORTANT TO DO THE FOLLOWING:[/b]
    1. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need. For a stand alone pc all you need is Internet Protocol TCP/IP.
    2. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections - LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.
    3. ALWAYS connect your modem via ethernet (NIC) and make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer and set your duplex mode to "auto". If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.
    4. Clean out your temporary internet files with CrapCleaner.
    5. Power cycle your modem i.e. unplug it for at least 15 seconds.
    6. Download, update and scan with SpyBot S&D 1.4, Ad-Aware SE 1.06 & ewido anti-spyware 4.0 to remove any spyware then install and update SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 to stay spyware FREE.
    7. Make sure you do the faster web page tweak in our Help & Tips page.
    8. If you aren't currently using a firewall then I suggest you install Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.5, it's FREE and uses next to no resources.
    9. Do a FREE online virus scan from BitDefender Online Scan and remove all that it finds.
    10. Make sure you have ALL of the latest Windows Updates.

    Mccoffee, thanks for your reply. After following your post, i now have download speeds higher than my uploads

    Here are my updated tcp/ip analyser results after following your post...
    TCP options string = 020405b401010402
    MTU = 1500
    MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
    MSS = 1460
    Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.
    Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 63888
    RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
    Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 63888

    For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
    Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
    513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
    256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
    128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
    64240 (MSS x 44)
    bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

    Your TCP Window limits you to: 2555.52 kbps (319.44 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
    Your TCP Window limits you to: 1022.208 kbps (127.776 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
    MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
    Time to live left = 59 hops
    TTL value is ok.
    Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
    Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
    IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000 (0)
    Below are some speed tests i did after following your post [plus uninstalling the unecessary protocols on my lan connection].

    from adslguide's speed test =
    download = 920.5kbps upload = 235.2kbps
    download = 921.5kbps upload = 235.4kbps

    from testmy.net download only speed test [using largest file = 2922 kB]

    I am using a draytek 2800g router. My pc is connected to it via ethernet cable.

    From the testmy.net results, it tells me that i'm only running at 64. something %. How can i make my connection better? Or is this ok for a 1mb connection???

    p.s. I am on 1mb connection but whenever i connect to the net, i get a pop up saying that i'm connected at 2mb. But i know that pipex caps me at 1mb [this is correct as i only pay for a 1mb connection.] I just thought i'd mention it in case the testmy.net site doesnt know that i am on a 1mb connection [cos it never asked me, unlike adslguide which did ask me]

    thanks

    Ya the 64% from testmy.net may be looking at something else or just be inaccurate. For a 1mb connection your doing good in the 920s and 930s.

    Pick the location closest to ya, see how that does.

    thanks guys for helping. I'm really happy seeing my speeds back to normal. I guess my pc just wasnt up to scratch with my new router. I did a speed test without the router and just using my normal modem. The download speed were in the 900's too.

    once again, thanks
