turn off DSL for computer maintenance?

Now that I have my ADSL conection, when it comes time to preform general maintenance I would like to disconnect from the Internet - what is the best way to do this ??? I have a Westell modem/router, win.98se w / verizon adsl - do I turn off the modem/router with the on/off rocker switch, up plug it, or maybe disconnect one of the lines from the Modem/router - all new to me and don't want screw things up right away, btw, did a Speakeasy test and have 716 kbps down and 131 kbps up - I have the 768/128 package from Verizon - Thanks for the help
