Exclamation All Expert Networkers Please Reply

I am currently an @home customer and i have a desktop hooked up to the cable modem and would like to hook my laptop up to this connection. I just bought an PCMCIA card for the Laptop and a Hub for the desktop and 60 feet of cat 5 cable....i plan to purchase an Additional IP adress from Comcast. Is this all i need ....do i need software for this connection to work? will this be an easy process for a Total Newbie to networking ....here is exactly what i bought

Netgear DS-104 4 port 10/100Mbps Dual speed hub

    Linksys PCMPC100 Etherfast 10/100 card

    60 feet cat 5 cable

already have a NIC card in the desktop and the cable modem

All replies and advice is welcome.....these parts will be arriving at my house this friday. Remember i am totally in the dark about this subject

    Thanks
    Robert

I have almost the same configuration. You are set, from what I have read on here, there may be a way around the extra IP address, however I purchased another one as well. As long as you have all of the software for you NIC card and PCMCIA card installed, you should be fine.

That should be all you need to properly set up a connection. This is a relativly easy process that should be done in just minutes

Oh yeah to get around that extra IP address you can puchase a router wich in my opinion is your best bet.Because you could return the hub and get a 4 port router and have as many IP's as you need.I would recomend A Linksys 4port router.

phillyman2001, I'd get a router or use a "server" to share the connection rather than shelling out more money per month for an additional IP.

Sr Ops, from what I've read/heard, the Ugate and Netgear routers are a couple of the best available. There are several routers in Speed Guide's Hardware Reviews section.

I think you should be happy linksys or Smc they both offer about the same features and run around the same price.I'm currently using the Linksys single port router on a 5 port switch and have been fairly happy except for tonight when I had a small dispute with there tech support.

The Cool part with @home is they have set it up to be whats called "plug en play" u do not have to have to buy any more ip addresses hehe. So you ask how do I know this ? well I have a small netowrk of, oh, 5 COMPUTERS ! all hooked up to my cable modem.
And they all have there own IP address. And I only pay for one !!! hehe

You mean they each have their own internal (non-routable) IP, and your using a router or "server" to share your connection, correct?

I don't know about that test. I don't think I'd trust it, and it reminds me of the MSN test.

    Wink

It is the MSN test.. or the same proggy on a different site, since as we all know MSN is "upgrading" theirs.

    Your line speed:
    8160 Kbps
    1000 K bytes/sec

^^ I got the same result, and I'll guarantee you I don't have that kind of speed! hehe

i not going to argue on the speed test i just went to a link i seen in another post here. i never tested before except MSN a couple times and i know it wasn't reliable. never cared to test it was fast enough for what i was doing no one complained of lag playing games from me. and ppl on @home roadrunner and aDSL never complained of download speeds i would hit their cap no problem. As for posting speed test results it my word and ability to say what i want that determains my speed if i so wish, i was just answering someone's inquiry. I admit the 254 pc's was a bit boa****l but its true a class c network can have up to 254 pc's on one @home ip. to lie and this person gets something they don't want or makes them decide to not get something they otherwise would have defeats the purpose of this forum and i have no desire to do that. I don't believe in the speed tests is why i never tested any more then those couple at MSN (joke) so whatever speed you say i have i will agree on.
